EARTHQUAKE (Reuters) – A fire broke out in the South African parliament on Cape Town on Sunday, and media reports echoed flames and a plume of smoke that could be seen for miles.
It was not immediately clear who was in the building.
The fire was on the third floor of the building and initial reports indicated that it started in the office and spread to a gym, said Jean-Pierre Smith, a member of the Cape Town Mayor’s Board of Trustees, a member of the safety and security department.
The roof area was on fire and the National Assembly building was also on fire, Smith said.
Television footage showed emergency services on the spot. Smith said it included six firefighters and about 36 firefighters.
