Ashes 2021: Smith is shocked that England is using Broad

Australian batsman Steve Smith said he was “a little surprised” that England’s Stuart Broad had not played a major part in the Ashes series.

Broad lost the first test in Brisbane and the last match in Melbourne as the Australians won the series 3-0 on an unbeaten run.

“We were a little surprised,” Smith said. “(Brisbane and Melbourne) were two wickets that would fit pretty well.

“Adelaide’s bowls went well. It’s always been a good match for me. I’ve been out a lot of times, I’ve got a few runs, so it’s been a decent fight.”

England’s selections have been criticized throughout the series and it is unclear who will make up the tourist attack when the team reunites in Sydney on Wednesday for the fourth round.

“(Broad) and Jimmy (Anderson) are two world-class performers who have been together for a long time,” Smith said.

“Maybe we’ll see them together here this week. I’m not sure.”

Smith has yet to complete a century in the series, the highest record he has had so far with 93 runs in the first round of the second Adelaide test.

He last played a ton against India a year ago at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

“It’s been a while since I’ve entered a hundred but I’ve approached Adelaide,” Smith said.

“I think we played a few wickets in the first three games.

“It’s not been a big game, so it’s been hard to pick up the pace and get excited, but I hope to spend a lot of time this week and score a big goal and help us continue to be successful as a team.”
