Egyptian authorities have released Egyptian and Palestinian rights activist Ramy Shaath from more than 900 days in detention after being forced to renounce his Egyptian nationality.

Shaath’s French wife Celine Lebrun Shaath, who was deported from Egypt after her arrest, lobbied the French government to press Egypt to release her.
The Egyptian authorities did not immediately comment on his release.
“If we rejoice that the Egyptian authorities have heard our call for freedom, we regret that Ramy was forced to renounce his Egyptian citizenship as a condition of his unconditional release,” the family notes. he said.
Repression
Shaath was arrested in Egypt in June 2019 and charged with aiding a “terrorist” group that was held in pre-trial detention along with other activists.
His arrest came amid ongoing crackdown on political dissent under Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and brought together liberal critics and members of the Muslim Brotherhood that led to the ouster of el-Sisi in 2013.
El-Sisi and his supporters have said they are there no political prisoners in Egypt, and security measures were needed to stabilize the country after a 2011 uprising.
Last month, several NGOs questioned President Emmanuel Macron’s fate over Shaath, a year after the French leader announced the el-Sisi case.
At the time, however, Macron made it clear that human rights would not be a condition for economic and military relations with Cairo.
France said in May that it would deliver 30 Rafale warplanes to Egypt by 2024, under a $ 4 billion ($ 4.8 billion) deal when it strengthened military cooperation with Cairo.
