MILAN (Reuters) – Pope Francis has called for dialogue and justice to end violent unrest in Kazakhstan on Sunday, adding that news of deaths in the country is sad.
“I am deeply saddened to learn that there have been casualties in the protests that have erupted in Kazakhstan in recent days,” the pope told hundreds of people in St. Peter’s Square for a noon blessing and speech.
“I pray for them and their families, and I hope that social harmony will be restored as soon as possible through dialogue, justice and the pursuit of common good,” the pope said.
Authorities in Kazakhstan said on Sunday that they had stabilized the situation across the country after the deadliest 30-year violence in independence, and that troops in a Russian-led military alliance were monitoring “strategic facilities.”
Russia’s Sputnik news agency reported that the Kazakh Ministry of Health had killed a total of 164 people, including two children, in Kazakhstan last week.
Demonstrations began a week ago against rising fuel prices before exploding into a wider protest against the government.
