The Bosnian Constitutional Court has ruled that the holiday is illegal because it discriminates against the Bosnian Muslim and Croatian Catholic communities.
Bosnian Serbs have held public celebrations to celebrate the national holiday of their autonomous Serb republic, and a Supreme Court in Milorad Dodi this week has ruled against a ban on memory and US sanctions.
January 9 is a day in which Bosnian Serbs proclaimed the creation of their own state in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992. It sparked a devastating war of nearly four years and killed about 100,000 people.
The date also coincides with a Serbian Orthodox Christian holiday, and it was this religious component that prompted the Bosnian Constitutional Court to declare the holiday illegal, discriminating against Bosnian Muslim and Croatian Catholic communities in the region.
More than 800 armed policemen took part in Sunday’s parade, including members of the counter-terrorism units, gendarmerie and cavalry, and students, war veterans and athletes marched through the streets of the region’s largest city, Banja Luka.
Spectators and marchers waved red, blue and white Serbian flags. Members of a special police unit sang songs that referred to the Republic of Serbia as a state of Christian heritage.
Al Jazeera’s Liljana Smiljanic, a reporter for the Bosnian Banja Luke, said that although the date was “sacred” for Serbs, it was completely different for Bosnians.
“They are [Bosnian Serbs] say [January 9 holiday] guarantees them freedom and the best conditions for living in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The parade and other ceremonies were attended by neighboring Serbian authorities, including Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic. Bosnian Russian and Chinese diplomats and several French far-right National Rally party officials were also present.
There were no signs of Bosnian Serb Armed Forces regiments deploying in the parade in previous years. Instead, the focus was on the militarized police, who led the parade with specially designed combat vehicles with helicopters flying over them.
Secessionist intentions
Dodik, who is currently serving as a Serb member of the Bosnian ethnic triple presidency, said “there is no freedom for the stateless Serbian people” in a speech to the people watching the parade.
If the Russian patriot has it repeatedly threatened Take out Serbian representatives from the Bosnian armed forces, the tax system and the judiciary and create separate Serbian institutions.
Last Wednesday, the United States was recently punished for corruption and for threatening Bosnia’s stability and territorial integrity.
The US-led Dayton Peace Agreement in 1995 ended Bosnia’s three-and-a-half-year ethnic war, dividing the Balkan country into two autonomous regions: the Serb Republic and the Bosnian-Croatian-dominated federation.
“Everything he does and announces he will do is not in line with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s constitution and the Dayton Peace Agreement,” Smijanic of Al Jazeera said.
“That’s the basis of everything in this country,” he added.
Dodik secessionist rhetoric he has encouraged Serb nationalists in recent months, who have caused riots throughout the Republic of Serbia in recent days by firing into the air near the mosque in prayer, publicly praising convicted war criminals and threatening Muslim neighbors.
He describes Bosniaks as “second-class people” and “treacherous converts” who sold their “original” [Orthodox Christian] faith for dinner ”.
