With the emergence of the pandemic, many aspects of our lives have changed and a lot of us are still trying to adapt to the new normal. Our daily lives have been affected by the COVID-19, as well as our professional lives with the “work from home” feature. Not only this but many of us have to see our loved ones through a mobile phone or laptop screen due to border restrictions.
Another very important thing that was disturbed was weddings and other forms of celebrations. Due to restrictions on huge gatherings, many couples had to organize a simple wedding with not too many lavish celebrations.
Let’s see how COVID-19 affected the purchasing of engagement rings, and whether it is similar to the pre pandemic times.
Online Shopping for Engagement Rings:
Shopping for an engagement ring for a partner is a special thing to do which a lot of couples wait eagerly for. However, with the coronavirus cases on the rise and with new variants emerging every few months, a lot of couples have missed out on that opportunity.
Hence, reportedly, many couples shopped for their wedding ring online only. According to a lot of buyers, they found it very convenient and less hassle free than physical shopping.
Some people were forced to shop online for their wedding and their engagement ring. However, a lot of people are now doing it by choice. This is because many of us do not want to risk ourselves to the virus which can definitely prove to be very deadly. Another reason is that some cities and countries have still not decided to lift up many of the restrictions they imposed during the lockdown. This might include less business hours for retail outlets, closure of shops and even restrictions on shopping malls. All this has left us no choice but to revert to online shopping.
Another reason why online shopping has seen such a rise is because of affordable prices and easy to compare features. Most brands come up with discounts and promotions on online shopping in order to encourage consumers to shop in this pandemic time. Hence, when people can find cheaper prices just at home, they would not want to get out of the house to go shopping.
Furthermore, it is easier for shoppers to compare prices, features, stones and manufacturing of the ring easily by comparability features. You do not have to go around from one shop to another to see where you can buy the best deals, instead you just have to open multiple links to see which item is the best.
Retail Shopping for Engagement Rings:
Many couples still prefer the traditional style of shopping and want to physically go and buy a ring for their partner. This is because of multiple reasons which are discussed below.
First of all, physically buying an engagement ring enables you to first try them on and then decide. You can see which size fits and which stone looks good on your hand. The online shopping experience does not allow that.
Another reason why people prefer shopping in retail outlets or malls is because they can get proof of the originality of the diamond or any other stone. This is a huge factor. People find it difficult to trust the originality of the ring when they shop online as they do not get a verification or a certificate of authenticity.
Engagement Rings’ Budget:
Pandemic is a time when people lose their jobs, get laid off or in some situations, have to take pay cuts because business is slow. Therefore, you will normally expect people to cut their budgets and shop for cheaper rings or have cheaper stones instead of the costly ones.
However, the data gathered from multiple reports is telling a different story. More than half of the people did not let this pandemic time or a cut in incomes affect their engagement or wedding ring budget. This is probably because an engagement ring is special for a person and is a symbol of two people’s bond. Another reason is that it signifies luxury and exclusivity and people do not want to compromise on that.
8% of people that were surveyed reported having spent more than what they had actually wished to spend, which is surprising in such times. 18% of the people, on the other hand, spent less than what they had initially planned.
However, this data can be a bit misleading. This is because many of the people have reported to sell off some of their jewelry or old rings in order for them to afford a ring today. This shows that to some extent, COVID-19’s impact on engagement ring trends is there.
Popular Gemstones and Styles:
According to surveys and other reports, it has been taken into account that people now prefer vintage style jewelry more, instead of having expensive gemstones. This is because this type of jewelry is far cheaper than diamond rings. Those who do not have a big budget would definitely prefer these styles of rings more.
However, those who have bought the rings on gemstones have preferred only one stone and that is the diamond. In these difficult times too, its popularity has not gone down. With the prices of commodities increased, most of the people have still preferred to buy the most expensive gemstone. Some people have even bought rings with Sapphire, Emerald and Ruby.
Bottom line:
There is no surprise that the wedding seasons have been seriously affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, it doesn’t seem that the jewelry market has taken that much of a hit that we expected. Nor is there a change in budgets nor a change in preferences and tastes of expensive gemstones. However, other things that are important for a wedding have been drastically disturbed and people who have their wedding in the coming months would be impatiently waiting for the pandemic to cool down.
