A fire in Kin Ma on Tuesday in a village of about 800 people has left about 200 homes turned into piles of ash and bricks.
The military set fire to a town in central Myanmar after clashes with opponents killed at least two elderly people, according to several people living in the village.
As the military continued to protest the February 1 coup, dozens of motorcyclists staged a dawn strike in Kachin state and hundreds of people in Hpakant municipality in Sagaing region, as well as in Dawei in Tanintharyi region on Thursday.
MRTV state television said Tuesday in Kin Ma, a town of about 800 people in the Magway region, that it had been sparked by “terrorists” and that the media had stated that they were “deliberately discrediting the military”.
Reuters news agency was unable to independently verify the cause of the fire. A military spokesman did not respond to calls for comment.
Kin Ma was missing about 30 homes on Wednesday, turning about 200 homes into ashes and piles of bricks, with several residents reporting the incident by phone and photos viewed by Reuters.
The fire was large enough to record NASA’s satellite fire control systems on Tuesday at 21:52 (15:22 GMT).
Citizens, speaking on condition of anonymity, said security forces had set fire to those opposed to the coup and killed at least two people.
A 32-year-old volunteer to help people displaced from the village said the two dead are elderly residents who were unable to escape their homes in the fire. Some people said they returned to the village on Wednesday and found the bodies.
Hidden from neighbors
Most of the villagers were still hiding in the surrounding forests, residents told Reuters.
MRTV said 40 “terrorists” had burned down a house in Kin Ma, starting a fire that spread from 225 homes in the town to 100.
Myanmar has been caught up in violence and protests Army leader Min Aung Hlaing has since arrested elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and taken command of the military. The generals ruled the Southeast Asian nation with an iron fist for most of the post-independence years, before giving some powers to a civilian government for a decade in interim political reform.

Photographs and videos taken after the Kin Ma fire showed a thin black smoke from the embers that were blackened on the blackened ground above the village.
Burnt wooden planks, sheets, bricks, and kitchen pots were scattered around, leaving only a few trees standing. Some of the images showed the bodies of animals.
“The junta has complained that it has burned an entire town in Magway and killed elderly residents, once again proving that the military continues to commit heinous crimes and has no respect for the people of Myanmar,” the UK embassy in Myanmar said on Twitter. Citing Ambassador Dan Chugg.
Human rights groups have accused Myanmar forces of burning hundreds of villages in 2017, in an attack that has taken hundreds of thousands of Muslims to Rohingya Muslims in a neighborhood near Bangladesh.

Security forces refused to light the fire and in some cases blamed the fire on the Rohingya.
The Western condemnation of the military government has intensified due to the use of force by the military against its opponents.
United Nations and The Association of Southeast Asian Nations could not take a united stance that would put more pressure on coup states.
The Association for the Support of Political Prisoners, a human rights group, says security forces have killed about 865 civilians since the coup, although the military has questioned the figure.
