ALMATY (Reuters) – Troops and protesters clashed in Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, on Thursday, with police saying they had “eliminated” dozens of incidents while trying to attack their offices.

Several armored personnel carriers and dozens of soldiers entered Almaty’s main square on Thursday morning, where hundreds of people were protesting against the government on Tuesday, Reuters reporters reported from the scene.

Shots were heard as troops approached the crowd, according to Reuters witnesses, but since then the situation in the square has calmed down.

In Kazakhstan, protests sparked by rising fuel prices initially killed eight police and national guard soldiers on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Kazakh president called for help from a Russian-led security alliance that offered to send peacekeepers.

State television reported on Thursday that the National Bank of Kazakhstan had decided to suspend the work of the country’s banks for the safety of its employees. The Internet is mostly down in the country.
