(Reuters) – A 1,500-acre fire near a community on the Big Sur coast of California has resulted in evacuations and the closure of part of a major highway, state and local authorities said on Saturday.
The Colorado fire, which has been active since Friday, was closed at 5 percent, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).
About 430,000 people live in a fire-fighting area in Monterey County. It was not immediately clear how many people lived in the evacuation area.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter at a local school on Friday night, county officials said.
California has long had an active fire season, but in recent years, climate change has been longer and more punishable.
Last year, the fire season began unusually early, due to constant drought and low reservoir levels, Cal Fire said. In January 2021 alone, the state fought 297 fires on 1,171 acres, the office said.
Colorado Fire is the only fire listed in the 2022 Cal Fire incident list so far.
This year, California is also facing the Santa Ana wind. A high wind warning was in effect in the area, with possible gusts of up to 70 miles (112.65 km) per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
