When buying a cabin: When we moved to Minnesota, wefconn bought a cabin next to the lake and dreamed of renting it. The Grand Marais is about four hours from our Minneapolis home, but when this booth went on sale in 2019, our daughter tied up and we went straight there. The neon carpet was green and orange, and we couldn’t see it through the windows, but we felt very lucky because it was ours when we received the news.

LIVING ROOM

Alone but together creating a room: The living room is in the ‘A’ of the A-frame, and it already had these little boxes and shelves. There are books to read, tall trees, and big windows: all these warnings to turn off your phone and get lost in other things. It’s a place to make your memories.

On no paint everything: I usually like bright white spaces, so it was scary to take a renovation filled with cedar wood. But it felt bad to paint them. Every room smells of cedar, and it’s almost like being in a sauna.

KITCHEN

About the “old” kitchen: The kitchen is the only place we took it to the columns, but I didn’t want to to feel as we carried it to the columns. And since we didn’t paint the cedar, I was eager to add color. I love this green.

On open shelves: I always hope that guests feel at home. Having open shelves helps to make everything visible, so no one is wondering where to find the containers and pans.

DINING ROOM

In the image window: I’m kidding that this window is our TV. When you sit down at the table, all the entertainment you need is right here. The birds come to say hello, and from time to time a fox enters.

Living in nature: The house is surrounded by evergreen leaves, so there is a 360 degree view of the trees. You can also see the water. It’s called Devil Track Lake, where you can go canoeing. The stars can be seen at night, and the whole place feels like magic.

LITERATE ROOM

In a bunk room: We love going up with friends and putting all the kids in the basement. We hung the Ikea curtains on a ceiling bracket that could be closed, creating an almost sleepy sleeping atmosphere. During the day, the cloths open to the football and the outing to the lake is easy.

Following a legacy: The house was built in the 1970s using a kit, and we found original papers and typewritten instructions. It was saved by a single family all these years, and even when we found their handwritten notes, we had even more respect for this place. It seems to me that we are part of a larger story.
