A stone column fell on recreational boats in Furnas Lake, killing at least seven people and injuring at least 32 people.

At least seven people have been killed and nine seriously injured when a stone wall fell on boats carrying tourists on a lake in southeastern Brazil.

Videos of Saturday’s event showed tourists screaming when a stone pillar collapsed, smashing several recreational boats and sending a huge wave over the Capitol Lake in the state of Minas Gerais.

The rescue team, including a diving team and members of the Brazilian Army, went to Lake Furnas.

In Minas Gerais, Brazil, a large block of rock in the Capitol Gorge was released and hit at least two boats moored in Lake Furnas.

The latest official figure is “seven dead and three missing,” said Pedro Aihara, a spokesman for the Mining Fire Department.

Another 32 were injured, including nine who had to be hospitalized, authorities said.

People injured in the accident had broken bones and one was seriously injured in the head and face in hospital.

Lake Furnas, founded in 1958 to house a hydroelectric power plant, is a popular tourist attraction in an area 420 kilometers (260 miles) north of Sao Paulo.

Capitol officials with a population of about 8,400 say the town can see about 5,000 visitors a weekend, and 30,000 on holidays.

Officials suggested the release of the rock front could have been linked to heavy rains that have recently caused flooding in the state and forced the evacuation of nearly 17,000 people.

On Saturday, a dike flooded an iron mine 300 miles east and cut off a major federal highway.
