WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. Sen. David Perdue plans to challenge Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in next year’s election.
Perdo plans to make a video of his announcement on Monday and at the same time file his campaign paper, Politico and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, citing unreported sources in his plans.
The Georgia Republican Party was not ready to comment immediately.
Reports say Perdue was hired by former President Donald Trump as governor after Kemp refused to help block the November 2020 election results when Democrat Joe Biden helped the state win the presidency.
Voter rights activist Stacey Abrams announced on Wednesday that she would run for governor of the Democratic Party in Georgia, in charge of her second bid.
Trump’s false claims about widespread election fraud have been blamed on the split of Georgia’s Republicans ahead of the U.S. second-round election in January, when Perdue was defeated by Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff. Former Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler also lost in the playoffs against Democrat Raphael Warnock.
