Sudan released coach Hubert Velud less than a month before the African Cup of Nations, after a bad run in the Qatar Arab Cup.

The 62-year-old Frenchman was released on Sunday after a meeting of the Sudanese Football Association’s executive committee, the organization confirmed on Monday.

He will be replaced by Borhan Tiak, who has served as Sudan’s top league coach for the past decade.

Sudan have lost three games in this month’s Arab Cup, and have conceded 10 goals without conceding a full selection for next month’s National Cup finals.

Sudan competes in Group D in the Cameroon Championship, opening the campaign against Garouan Guinea-Bissau on January 11 and then joining Nigeria and Egypt.

Egypt won 5-0 at the Doha Arabian Cup on December 4th.

Velud helped Sudan out of South Africa in the Nations Cup qualifying round in March to make it to the semi-finals for the first time since 2012.

The Frenchman was the coach of Togo when he went to the 2010 Angolan Cup final and his bus was attacked by separatists. The shooting killed two members of the Togolese delegation. Velud was shot in the arm.

He is the fourth coach to lose his job since qualifying for the Nations Cup final. Guinea and Mauritania have released their coaches in the last three months, with Nigeria separating from Gernot Rohr on Sunday.
