AFCON: No wonder Egypt beat Sudan in the last 16

Egypt qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday and the result that has shaken the tournament in recent days has come as a surprise.

Egypt beat Sudan 1-0 in the final Group D match of Yaounden, and confirmed their place in the quarter-finals after finishing second in the group behind Nigeria.

Defender Mohamed Abdelmonem was the first to reach the corner kick, but his header was blocked by the keeper.

Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in another group match, having already qualified for the last 16 as a group winner.

Nigeria had goals from Umar Sadiq and William Troost-Ekong in the second half and are the only team to have three wins in the group stage.

Egypt would certainly be nervous after seeing the fate of some former Cameroonian champions.

The Algerian runners-up won 1-0 on Sunday in a match that seemed to surprise Equatorial Guinea in a four-time win over Ghana, who were knocked out of the tournament on Tuesday and knocked out by the Comoros of the smaller island of Comoros.

Egypt were very bad when they started in Cameroon, they lost to Nigeria and then only beat Guinea-Bissau in their second set match, thanks to a goal from Mohamed Salah and a great draw from Guinea-Bissau.

Egypt is not yet at a high level, but there were better signs against Sudan.

Mostafa Mohamed and Abdallah Said both denied Sudanese goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa in the first half.

Salah showed his best skills when he overcame defenders in this tournament, and Ali Abu Eshrein, who replaced Mustafa, released a low shot.

Salah also set Amr el-Solia in front of the gate. El-Solia fired.

The match is a kind of derby because the two countries are neighbors. But they are not close to the latest achievements. Egypt is a seven-time African Cup-winning record holder, while Sudan won the cap in 1970, but has only passed the group stage once in 52 years.

The two results on Tuesday ranked them among the top four teams in third place in Cape Verde and Malawi. This is the first time Malawi has reached the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
