At least six people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a restaurant in Beni, near the DRC’s eastern border with Uganda.
A suicide bomber has hit a restaurant in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Beni, killing at least five people and killing him, according to authorities.
“Five people were killed in the blast, plus six bombers,” Mayor Narcisse Muteba Kashale told Reuters on Saturday.
Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said on Twitter that it was caused by a suicide bombing and that security forces were investigating the incident.
No immediate liability was claimed.
“The loss of human life has been denounced. Security services have already been deployed and the first steps have been taken, ”Muyaya said on Twitter.
The AFP news agency said earlier that its correspondent had seen the remains of at least three bodies at the scene of the explosion at the In Box restaurant.
Kashal, who is also a police colonel, said at least two of the victims were children. The injured were taken to a local hospital, he said.
“Investigations are underway to find the perpetrators of this terrorist attack,” he told The Associated Press.
Beni, near the DRC’s eastern border with Uganda, has been the scene of clashes between the military and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a historically Muslim group in Uganda.
In June, three bombs rocking in the east of the country, authorities said they were planning more attacks.
In late November, the DRC and Uganda launched a joint operation against the ADF in the east of the country after Congolese troops fought for months to quell the ADF’s bloody attacks.
