MILAN (Reuters) – Italian anti-competition authorities have fined US technology giants Amazon.com (NASDAQ 🙂 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ 🙂 a total of more than 200 million euros ($ 225 million) for selling anti-competitive cooperation in Apple. and Beats products.
The contractual provisions of a 2018 agreement between the companies meant that only selected vendors were allowed to sell Apple and Beats products on Amazon.it, the competition watchdog said, adding that it violated EU rules.
The authority fined Amazon 68.7 million euros and Apple 134.5 million euros, and ordered companies to end the restrictions without giving Apple and Beats genuine product retailers any way to gain access to Amazon.it.
Apple has denied any wrongdoing and said it intends to appeal the fine.
“To ensure that our customers buy real products, we work closely with our vendor partners and have expert teams working with law enforcement, customs and retailers around the world to ensure that only real Apple products are sold,” he said.
An Amazon representative was unable to comment immediately.
