And while we love it traditions, we also like to change things and give our opinion on the season. So this year, we follow the founder of Anastasia Casey Collective identity and IDCO studio—With a modern holiday decorating look that hops the brightness of a neutral and natural theme.
The goal was simple, neutral, and natural, so Casey incorporated his monochromatic aesthetic, layering the texture and pattern with a holiday green, reminiscent of a forest scene drawn from a modern tale. A just finished complete renovation last year, she couldn’t wait to decorate the new holiday space. “For me, the holidays are a source of gratitude for the abundance we experience throughout the year, so I continue to be very natural when I decorate things,” she shares. “I tried to focus on ideas that seemed appropriate to the ongoing pandemic: sustainability, simplicity, ease of storage, and efficiency.”
Our favorite detail? Beautiful black velvet ribbons. In fact, Casey says this was the starting point for modern holiday decorating and inspired the entire color palette throughout the house. To make the birth feel, but not cliché, she chose a different color block and texture. After getting the local beeswax candles, Casey was inspired by his golden butter color and played with the ribbon. “Although minimal, the color-locked view creates a significant moment,” he noted. We couldn’t agree more.

Tell us more about the color palette.
I choose a color palette every holiday season and walk around with it all over the house. I like green to be the focal point, so I usually pick two or three monochrome shades to complete it. I went with a faded copper color and a faded marigold. They share a similar tone and complement each other, while being distinct enough to feel unique. Just three balls of velvet ribbon were enough to decorate my whole house.
The greenery is wonderful. Tell us. Any tips for maintenance?
All the beautiful greens came from Lulu and Georgia. Because I was natural all our wreaths and garlands, I immediately soaked in the bathtub all night. This gives your living greens a last good drink after the trip and prepares them for a week or two on your walls. After hanging the green, I mist once or twice a week with a water tap. We’ve had a particularly warm autumn season so far here in Austin, so I’ve been pouring water every day.
What’s so significant about a goat’s head? ”
I always focus a little on the “off” colors. Blurred mustard, heather powder, deep cobalt: The trick to feeling the holiday is to use satin or velvet ribbons and skip the glitter.
Placing candles on the green is a nice touch. Any tips for that?
Safety is always my top priority when it comes to holiday decorations, so it was essential to make sure that these candles were stable. Instead of using a traditional garland, I cut out the olive branches and wrapped them around the candles so that they would sit flat on the mantle.
What is the best approach to recreating this tablecloth look? Any tricks people can steal?
Get as many different sized candles as possible and then buy 20% more. The best way to recreate this look is to put the candles together very well, leaving little space between them. It has a more editorial effect and feels less kitsch. When it comes to sock styling, less is more! Some simple velvet ribbons paired with monochrome colors enhance the overall look.
What kind of greenery works best for this mantle look and were you inspired by the artwork when choosing it?
This look works universally with the greenery you can find. Throughout the season, I cut new branches in my garden and replace them every two weeks to keep my mantle fresh and green. These special branches are olive branches, a traditional symbol of peace, and I got them from a local olive grove. When I selected my color palette, I used mine Samsung Frame TV to find additional arts to appear. This is a Rembrandt from the Samsung Art Store. I love this TV because I have access to the art archives of major museums around the world, which makes it very easy to change for the season.
We love the other natural elements that you used to decorate, can you expand on that?
This year, I decided to focus on natural wreaths and garlands for my holiday decor, and I love the way the house smells, especially when you use unexpected greenery, such as bay leaves, olive branches, or a eucalyptus garland. In the kitchen, I like to decorate with the seasonal harvest: khaki bowls, grenades tucked in open shelves and small rosemary on the table that I prepare all winter.
Any tips for people who don’t have a big decorating budget?
Yes, that’s right you can now become known as a Lord of the Rings! Use the items around you in a new way. Holidays are bright, so group brass or chrome decorative accents spread across your home in more strategic places. Shiny metal lamps, sculptural objects, or storage boxes get the perfect shine when thrown into a room.

From vintage landscape farms to budget-friendly downloadable prints, changing your artwork to something seasonal is a designer trick that makes things feel special. I have a large snowy landscape painted by my biramama, which I hung in our living room, which immediately sets the tone for the entire space. Inserting small printers into metal frames is a perpetual trick on your shelves that sparks small moments of joy.
We love how simple the holiday decor is and how it makes up the space. Was that intentional?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the last 18 months or so, it’s that simplicity is a luxury. Every moment of your day has the potential to be unique, and sometimes it takes a lot of abuse to find it. I recommend decorating in phases if decorating your home is too scary for a weekend. A small wreath hanging on the bed is all that a bedroom needs to feel festive. Bright crystal lights can be all that your tree needs right now, and you can add decorations to your family in just a few weeks. Enjoy every moment as it comes and appreciate the beauty in simplicity.
