Manchester United have appointed Ralf Rangnick as interim coach until the end of the season, the Premier League club announced on Monday, eight days later. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was removed from office.

“He was our first candidate for interim director, reflecting the invaluable leadership and technical skills he will bring from his nearly four decades of experience in management and coaching,” said Manchester United Football Director John Murtough.

Rangnick, the former RB Leipzig boss, said he was excited to join Manchester United and focused on making the club a successful season.

“The lineup is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience,” he said. “All my efforts for the next six months will be to help these players reach their full potential, both individually and especially as a team.

“In addition, I hope to support the club’s long-term goals through advice.”

From the relative experience of United Solskjaer, who was in charge for three years and did not win a trophy despite improving his squad, he has moved on to coach Rangnick, who has influenced coaches such as Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel, Bayern Munich. Julian Nagelsmann and Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool.

He has experience as a sports director and first team manager, mainly in the Red Bull club network, with roles in Salzburg and Leipzig. Previously, he won the German Cup with Schalke in 2011, when he also reached the Champions League finals.

Rangnick Lokomotiv has been in Moscow since July.
