Alex Carey will be the Australian wicketkeep for the first two Ashes Tests, and will replace former captain Tim Paine, who has rested in mental health after a “sexting” scandal.

The 30-year-old will make his Test debut at the opening of the Ashes in Brisbane, where he has represented Australia in 45 international and 38 T20 matches a day.

“Alex has been a regular member of the national team in white ball cricket, especially in a one-day match,” select president George Bailey said Thursday.

“Kriker is a great player and a great individual who will bring a lot of strength to the team.

“He will be well deserved to be the holder of the 461 wide green cap.”

Carey preferred Josh Inglis without a wicketkeeper, who returned home this week to the Western Australian state and will instead play in Australia ‘A’ against England’s Lions.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity. It’s an exciting development for a huge forward-looking series,” Carey said.

“It is my involvement to prepare my attention and help Australia secure the Ashes.”

Carey’s selection to the 15-man Ashes team in Australia follows Paine’s decision to retire from cricket for welfare reasons.

Paine left the captaincy four years ago among revelations investigating sexually explicit messages to a former Tasmanian employee.
