4. NEW DAYS

Mitchell Starc knocked out England captain Joe Root with the last ball of the fourth day on his way to a firm win over Australia in Sunday’s second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval.

Australia declared 230-9 in the second inning before the break, setting England a 468 victory goal.

The Touring team won 82-4 on the stalks, losing to Root in the final and facing a second heavy defeat in a five-game series.

Ben Stokes, the hero of his batsman, achieved the most successful Ashes race in England two years ago in Leeds, his team was still in third place with 386 goals.

Australia showed their intent by removing Haseeb Hameed opener for a duck before tea and sending Dawid Malan, who was 20 after the break, sent him back.

England settled briefly on Rory Burns, who had 17 runs in his previous three innings on this tour, holding on firmly before leaving for 34, when Steve Smith was caught by the slips of a receiver from Jhye Richardson.

Starc Root suffered a painful blow to the abdomen before the England captain was removed from office, ending another gratifying day for Australia.
