Australian Harry Souttar suffered a previous cruciate ligament injury in a draw against Sydney in Saudi Arabia, with the center-back unlikely to be available for the team’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Souttar, who plays for the Stoke City English Championship, returned to the UK on Sunday where he will undergo rehabilitation, Football Australia said in a statement.

Stoke City said the 23-year-old, who was put on the stretcher in Thursday’s 0-0 draw, will miss the rest of the season, leaving Australia out of the remaining five Asian qualifiers for next year’s Qatar World Cup.

“We’re impressed with Harry,” said Graham Arnold, Socceros coach. “Harry is young and determined and positive, and he won’t leave a stone unturned to return to the field as soon as possible.”
