[ad_1]

Welcome to Sportstar’s Highlights of the T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12 match between Bangladesh and South Africa from the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

South Africa beats Bangladesh by six wickets

Player of the Match: Kagiso Rabada 3-20 (4 overs)

MATCH RECAP:

David Miller (5* off 2) sealed a win for South Africa with a boundary as it thrashed Bangladesh by six wickets with 39 balls to spare and extended its unbeaten run in T20Is against the Tigers to seven matches. Skipper Temba Bavuma (31* off 28) and Rassie van der Dussen 22(27) combined for a 47-run stand to lift the Proteas from a brief scare after Taskin Ahmed’s (2-18) incisive spell left it reeling at 33 for three in a paltry chase of 85.

Put in to bat, Bangladesh was rattled by Rabada’s pace and bounce as he took the first three wickets with just 24 runs on the board. Anrich Nortje (3-8) followed suit to remove Mahmudullah with a menacing bouncer before Dwaine Pretorius pitched in with a wicket off his first ball to leave the Tigers in tatters at 34-5. Liton Das’ (24 off 36) defiance was cut short by Tabraiz Shamsi and Nortje wrapped up the innings with two wickets from two balls as Bangladesh was skittled out for 84 – its lowest score against South Africa in T20Is.

FULL REPORT HERE: Rabada, Nortje fashion big win for South Africa over Bangladesh

South Africa Innings

SA 86/4 in 13.3 overs: Miller gets off the mark with a drive to deep extra cover for one. Bavuma tucks it to short fine for one more. FOUR! Pitched up by Mahedi in the slot and Miller picks it up with an on-drive over midwicket.

SA 80/4 in 13 overs: Nasum to Bavuma. Three runs first up as Bavuma lofts it over mid-on. FOUR! Slightly short and Bavuma slashes it behind point to find the boundary. Single for Bavuma and FOUR! van der Dussen steps out to flick it off his pads over midwicket. OUT! van der Dussen looks to finish it with a six and lofts it over the bowler. Doesn’t get enough on it and Shoriful completes a brilliant catch running towards the boundary. Rassie van der Dussen c Shoriful Islam b Nasum Ahmed 22(27b 2×4 0x6).

SA 67/3 in 12 overs: Sarkar into the attack. Three singles and FOUR! Outside off and Bavuma drags it over mid-on.

SA 60/3 in 11 overs: Mahedi returns. van der Dussen tucks it off his legs to square leg for one. Bavuma returns strike with one more to long-on. van der Dussen skips down the pitch to nudge for one at midwicket. Beaten! Full and turns away from Bavuma.

South Africa needs 30 runs to win from 60 balls.

SA 55/3 in 10 overs: Shoriful to bowl. Five from the over and Bavuma seems to have found his groove on this tricky wicket. Drives neatly past mid-on to get three.

SA 50/3 in 9 overs: Nasum to bowl. van der Dussen drives for one. Bavuma opens the face to run it behind point for two. SIX! Short and Bavuma goes deep into the crease and pulls it over long-on.

SA 41/3 in 8 overs: Sharp in-swinger from Taskin to Bavuma first up. FOUR! On the up and Bavuma cashes in with a cover drive.

SA 37/3 in 7 overs: Shoriful over the wicket to van der Dussen. Beautifully driven by Bavuma through covers and he’ll get three. Four from the over.

SA 33/3 in 6 overs: Taskin runs in for his third. Beats van der Dussen’s outside edge first up. Single to mid-off and it looked risky for a while as it flew off a leading edge. FOUR-BYES! Sharp off-cutter that misses Markram’s off stump and beats the keeper. OUT! Markram pokes at it and gets the outside edge to slip. Bavuma is greeted with another one that scythes into him from outside off. Aiden Markram c Mohammad Naim b Taskin Ahmed 0(4b 0x4 0x6).

SA 28/2 in 5 overs: Mahedi introduces spin. FOUR! Mahedi goes full and de Kock makes room to slice it to the extra cover boundary. FOUR! Reverse-sweeps a full length to the third boundary. OUT! Good response from Mahedi and de Kock succumbs for the lack of turn. Markram comes in and defends first ball to end the over. Quinton de Kock b Mahedi Hasan 16(15b 3×4 0x6).

SA 20/1 in 4 overs: Three dot balls first up and FOUR! van der Dussen breaks the shackles with a flick to the square leg boundary. Shoriful is keeping it short of length and between middle and off.

SA 16/1 in 3 overs: Good discipline from Taskin to give just three off the first five balls. The batters are timing it well but finding the fielders on each occasion. FOUR! Tasking goes short last ball and de Kock pulls it away to the square leg boundary.

SA 9/1 in 2 overs: van der Dussen comes in. Shoriful to bowl over the wicket to de Kock. There is bite in this pitch and as de Kock gets a leading edge trying to drive on the onside and falls short of point. Runs it down to third for a single. Clipped by van der Dussen to square leg for one to end the over.

SA 6/1 in 1 over: de Kock and Hendricks walk out to the middle to get this total down in quick time. Taskin starts off with a wide down leg but impressive swing for him. de Kock off the mark with a single at mid-off. FOUR! Hendricks drives through covers on a full length to open his account. OUT! Taskin strikes to remove Hendricks. Full but nipped back in to hit Hendricks flush on the pad. He has a discussion with de Kock and decides against reviewing. Reeza Hendricks lbw b Taskin Ahmed 4(5b 1×4 0x6).

This should be a cakewalk for South Africa but they will look to get this total down in quick time to beef up their Net Run Rate as the race to the semifinal is likely to tighten with Australia.

This is Bangladesh’s lowest T20I total against South Africa and its sixth lowest total overall.

Bangladesh Innings

BAN 84 all out in 18.2 overs: Nortje bowls his last. OUT! Pitched short and gets the edge trying to pull, loops up and straight to Nortje. Mahedi Hasan c & b Anrich Nortje 27(25b 2×4 1×6). OUT! Jammed into the toes and number 11 Nasum has no answer to it. He goes deep into his crease and hits the wickets with his bat trying to fend it. Nasum Ahmed hit wicket b Anrich Nortje 0(1b 0x4 0x6).

BAN 84/8 in 18 overs: Shamsi bowls out. OUT! Bavuma takes aim and hits the stumps at the non-striker’s end from mid-off to remove Taskin. Taskin Ahmed run out (Bavuma) 3(5b 0x4 0x6). SIX! Mahedi still in with a fight. Gets to the pitch and lofts it over deep extra cover for a maximum. Shuffles to off and drives for a single.

BAN 77/7 in 17 overs: Pretorius at the death. Mahedi takes one to hand the strike to Taskin. Punches it off the back-foot to mid-off; Bavuma misfields and they steal a single. Clipped for a single at mid-on and a wild throw at the stumps allows a second. Two singles to end the over.

BAN 71/7 in 16 overs: Shamsi continues. A couple for Shamim at long-off. OUT! Shamim perishes. Shamim looks for a boundary and lofts it straight to long-on as he doesn’t get much bat on it. A couple of singles and FOUR! Mahedi pulls to deep midwicket to find the boundary. Shamim Hossain c Keshav Maharaj b Tabraiz Shamsi 11(20b 0x4 0x6).

BAN 62/6 in 15 overs: Rabada into the attack. No-ball first ball. Yorks Mahedi outside off on the free hit and he swings and misses. Good length in the channel and shapes away to beat Mahedi. Wider on off and good length again and moves away even more to beat Mahedi. Strays on leg side this time and swivels to hit it fine for one. No-ball again! A couple of runs at long-off off the free hit. A tad bit too wide and Shamim throws his bat at it.

BAN 56/6 in 14 overs: Shamsi to Shamim. Gets the edge trying to sweep and just one. Shamim misses the reverse-sweep and it thuds onto his front pad. LBW appeal turned down and SA reviews. Pitched on leg but didn’t spin enough to hit the stumps. Shamim survives.

BAN 54/6 in 13 overs: Maharaj continues. FOUR! Finally the ball sees the rope as Mahedi runs it down to third, opening the face of the bat very late. A couple more for Mahedi as it takes his edge to backward point. Eight from the over and a good one for BAN in the context of the match.

BAN 46/6 in 12 overs: Shamsi bowls his first over. Pitched up to Liton first ball and drives uppish to extra cover for a couple. OUT! Liton trapped in front. Liton stepped out trying to take it on the full and got done with the turn. Hits him on the front pad and review confirm the ball was hitting leg stump. Mahedi gets a single first ball. Liton lbw b Tabraiz Shamsi 24(36b 1×4 0x6).

BAN 43/5 in 11 overs: Maharaj comes back for some spin. Free singles from Maharaj’s off-spin. Batters nudge it around for singles as Maharaj keeps it at good length.

Halfway into the innings and nothing has gone BAN’s way. Menacing bouncers from the pacers have left the batters rattled. A long road to recovery for BAN from here on.

BAN 40/5 in 10 overs: Nortje bowls his third. Just four from it as the batters are cautious, playing it along the ground for a single and a brace to end the over.

BAN 36/5 in 9 overs: Pretorius continues. OUT! Afif is cleaned up first ball. Between middle and leg, Afif clears his front foot to smash it on the on-side and misses. It goes off his upper thigh to crash into the stumps. Afif Hossain b Pretorius 0(1b 0x4 0x6). Shamim gets off the mark with a single. Liton goes aerial and just short of gully and he’ll take a single.

BAN 34/4 in 8 overs: Nortje replaces Rabada. Liton skims it behind point for a single. A ripper! Jags back in sharply at 140 kmph to beat Mahmudullah and flies over the stumps. Strays on leg and clipped fine for just one. OUT! Another one falls to the bounce. Short and into Mahmudullah. He tries to fend it off, goes off the glove and loops to point. Mahmudullah c Aiden Markram b Anrich Nortje 3(9b 0x4 0x6).

BAN 31/3 in 7 overs: The Powerplay is done and in comes Pretorius with the ball. Targets the channel area and goes full as only three runs come from it.

BAN 28/3 in 6 overs: Rabada continues. Rahim edges first ball but falls short of point. OUT! Rahim doesn’t survive long however. Extra bounce and edged to slip where Hendricks takes a stunner. Stretches his arms high to cling on to it and grips it tight as he tumbles down. Skipper Mahmudullah comes in and gets a couple first ball with a leg glance. Strays on leg and off to concede two wides. Surprise bounce again and it shoots up in the air almost over Mahmudullah’s head and Rabada can’t get there on time. This is turning out to a stellar spell. Rabada just had two wickets so far in the tournament and has taken three already today. Mushfiqur Rahim c Reeza Hendricks b Kagiso Rabada 0(3b 0x4 0x6).

BAN 24/2 in 5 overs: Nortje into the attack. A couple for Liton at deep midwicket with a deft push off a length ball. A nasty, quick old-fashioned bouncer and Liton yanks his head back in time to let it fly over. Just two runs from the over.

BAN 22/2 in 4 overs: Rabada continues. Naim pushes it mid-on for one and Bavuma seems to have twisted his ankle there trying to collect it. Good slower ball on the off beats Naim who looks to slash it. OUT! Naim departs. He looked to go for a big heave but picked the midwicket fielder to perfection. Mohammad Naim c Reeza Hendricks b Kagiso Rabada 9(11b 1×4 0x6). Soumya Sarkar comes in and is under the pump first ball. Yorker from Rabada which tails in a bit and loud LBW appeal turned down, but Bavuma wants the review. OUT! It was hitting the boot first and crashing into off-stump. Two in two for Rabada. Soumya Sarkar lbw b Kagiso Rabada 0(1b 0x4 0x6).

BAN 17/0 in 3 overs: Maharaj continues. Three singles off the first four balls. FOUR! Short and Naim punched it off the backfoot to mid-on and Markram lets a rolling ball through his legs for four. Quick single to mid-off to end the over.

BAN 9/0 in 2 overs: Rabada bowls from the other end. Liton swats straight to point; dot ball. FOUR! Delectable cover drive by Liton. Over-pitched and Liton just uses the pace on the ball to drive. Single to cover. On the leg-side to Naim and it goes off the pad and de Kock dives to collect it. Defended back to the bowler. Loud LBW appeal and turned down, it was going down leg.

BAN 4/0 in 1 over: Maharaj to Naim first ball. Parried back to the bowler. Tucked away to midwicket for one and BAN is off the mark. Pushed to mid-on by Liton, Nortje misfields and they take two. Single to Liton to end the over.

Both teams file out onto the field for the national anthems. Bangladesh is up first. The Proteas are in huddle while Mohammad Naim and Liton Das walk out to the middle to open the batting. Keshav Maharaj to get the proceeding underway with the ball. Both teams take the knee united against racism.

Shamim Hossain has 72 runs from six T20I innings, averaging 14.4 and is yet to pick a wicket. The 21-year-old will have big shoes to fill as he comes in for arguably one of the best all-rounders in white-ball cricket Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh Playing XI: Mohammad Naim, Liton Das (wk), Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam

South Africa Playing XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Temba Bavuma (c), Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi

UPDATE: Another big blow for Bangladesh as Mustafizur Rahman also misses out after Shakib was ruled out of the tournament earlier on Sunday.

Stay tuned for the toss and Playing XI update at 3:00 PM IST.

PITCH REPORT: The surface is green and hard and Murali Kartik reckons Anrich Nortje will love bowling on this pitch. Pacers have taken 67 wickets at Abu Dhabi so far in the tournament while spinners have picked 29. Looks like Bangladesh will have to buckle-up for a lethal assault from South Africa’s pace duo Nortje and Kagiso Rabada and look out for Dwaine Pretorious variations at the death.

Throwback to when David Miller smashed Mohammad Saifuddin for five sixes in an over en route to a 36-ball 101 in 2017.

Abu Dhabi in T20 World Cup 2021:

Batting first won: 2

Batting second won: 6

Average first innings score: 131

Head-to-head

The Tigers will be looking to draw first blood against the Proteas as they have not yet beaten them in the format. South Africa has won all six encounters between the teams, including one at the T20 World Cup in 2007.

MATCH PREVIEW

An upbeat South Africa will face a struggling Bangladesh in the Group 1 Super 12 game at the ICC T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

South Africa has won two and lost one, and one of its remaining games is against in-form England. But to keep its knockout hopes alive, South Africa first needs to beat Bangladesh, whose chances of making the last four are slim at the moment.

The Proteas have shown tremendous fortitude in the face of adversity. Despite the controversy involving Quinton de Kock and racism, the players have stood united and found ways to win. The wicketkeeper-batsman brought the side closer by clearing the air later on.

Temba Bavuma has drawn flak for scoring slowly – however, his run-a-ball 46 was key to South Africa getting over the line in a tricky chase against Sri Lanka. He will be under pressure to score at a better strike rate.

The lack of middle-order options means South Africa will adopt a top-heavy approach. In David Miller, they have a batter whose T20 finisher reputation precedes him.

Dwaine Pretorius has emerged as the death bowling specialist, while Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada have been good upfront and at the death. Leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi now has more T20I wickets in a calendar year than anyone else. However, Shamsi and Miller have minor injury concerns.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh needs to shore up its fielding. There were three dropped catches during the defeat against West Indies on Friday. Shakib Al Hasan’s hamstring injury is a telling blow. The all-rounder will miss the rest of the tournament. Head coach Russell Domingo said on match eve that Shamim Hossain would replace Shakib in the playing XI. Nurul Hasan, who missed the last match, is still unfit.

Soumya Sarkar and Afif Hossain need to come good with the bat while the responsibility to shepherd the middle-order will lie with Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. Left-arm quick Shoriful Islam, with his change of pace, could be handy at the death.

South Africa is unbeaten in six T20Is against Bangladesh, and the latter will hope to snap the streak.
