[ad_1]
Welcome to Sportstar’s Highlights of the T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12 match between Bangladesh and West Indies from the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah.
West Indies beat Bangladesh by three runs.
Player of the Match: Nicholas Pooran 40 (22).
Andre Russell held his nerve in a tense final over to hand West Indies a three-run victory over Bangladesh in a Super 12 match at the T20 World Cup 2021. Bangladesh needed 13 runs off the last over with skipper Mahmudullah at the crease. However, Bangladesh managed only nine from the last six balls. With four needed off the last ball, Russell bowled it full outside off as Mahmudullah couldn’t get any bat on it trying to slash it to the boundary.
FULL REPORT HERE: T20 World Cup: Pooran, bowlers hand West Indies win over Bangladesh
BANGLADESH INNINGS
BAN 139/5 in 20 overs: Afif Hossain comes in. BAN needs 13 from 6 balls. Russell to bowl. Afif on strike. Two runs as Afif laps it behind to fine leg. 11 from 5. Beaten but the batters scamper for a single as Pooran misses the stumps. Mahmudullah on strike. 10 to win from 4 balls. In the blockhole and pushed to mid-on for a couple. 8 to win off 3 balls. DROPPED! Pulled away fiercely and the substitute Fletcher drops it at deep square leg. Two runs. 6 off 2. Yorker again and misfield at long-on will allow for a couple. 4 to win off 1. Dot ball and WI wins. Pitched full outside off and Mahmudullah tries to reach to it with a full stretch and misses.
BAN 130/5 in 19 overs: SIX! Mahmudullah smokes it over long-on and that makes it easier. Steps out and Bravo bowls it wide for a dot ball. Full and driven straight to point and a quick single. 15 to win from 9 balls. Liton shuffles across wide and looks to scoop. It is too full and gets an inside edge for a single. Straight to point again and another quick single. OUT! Huge wicket as Liton finds the fielder at long-on. Liton Das c Holder b Bravo 44(43b 4×4 0x6).
BAN needs 22 from 12 balls.
BAN 121/4 in 18 overs: Rampaul with the ball. FOUR! Welcome boundary for BAN. Sprayed on the legs and Liton steers it fine. Good comeback from Rampaul after the first ball four. Just four from the next five.
BAN needs 30 runs from 18 balls.
BAN 113/4 in 17 overs: Bravo continues. Wide and full and Liton reaches out to slice it straight to point; dot ball. Way outside off and not called a wide as Liton moves across to the off-stump. Yorker length on the off and just a single at deep extra cover. Another dot ball. Just one run from the first four balls. Slog swept from wide across off to mid-wicket and Walsh doesn’t reach to it in time. A slower one and Mahmudullah is beaten.
BAN 110/4 in 16 overs: Holder to Liton. Opens the face of the bat for a single to third. Shuffles across to off stump and thumps it into the ground for just a single. Follows Liton on his legs and pushed straight for another single. Wide down the leg. Wide again. Mahmudullah is shuffling slightly to the off and toying with the bowler’s line. Tucked off the pads for a couple, good running between the wickets. FOUR! Ramp shot behind the stump as he guides the face of the blade towards the fine leg boundary.
BAN 99/4 in 15 overs: Russell with the ball. FOUR! Mahmudullah glances it over square leg. Only six runs from the over.
BAN 93/4 in 14 overs: Rampaul into the attack. FOUR! Short and wide and Rahim cuts away behind point to find the boundary. Cut again but straight to the fielder at point this time. OUT! Rahim looks to get cheeky, looking to scoop a fuller one over the keeper. He misses and it crashes into the stumps. Skipper Mahmudullah comes in. Pushed on the off for a single first ball. Tucked to long-on for one more. Pulled and a misfield at mid-wicket for allow a single. Rahim b Rampaul 8(7b 1×4 0x6).
BAN needs 57 runs from 42 balls.
BAN 86/3 in 13 overs: Akeal bowls out. Six singles from the over. The batters keep finding the gaps off the back-foot as Akeal persists with a very straight line.
BAN 80/3 in 12 overs: Bravo continues. Round the wicket to Liton and five wides as the keeper is up. FOUR! Short and on leg and Liton pulls it behind with ease to find the boundary. Wide again and that’s 10 runs from one ball. Precious runs coming Bangladesh’s way. Correct his line this time and goes full on the stumps; dot ball. Cut to backward point and a bold single as a direct-hit would have seen the back of Rahim. Clipped off the pads to deep square leg and Liton will get two. Pushed off the front-foot to mid-off for a single. Expensive over from Bravo and BAN won’t mind it at all.
BAN 65/3 in 11 overs: Akeal to bowl. FOUR! Sarkar gets to the pitch of the ball and deposited to the mid-wicket boundary. OUT! Leading edge as Sarkar looks to play it on the off-side on the up and it shoots up; Gayle dives forward at short third to complete the dismissal. FOUR! Liton pulls it away to the deep-wicket boundary. Soumya Sarkar c Gayle b Akeal 17(13b 2×4 0x6).
BAN 55/2 in 10 overs: Bravo into the attack. Slower one wide of off stump and Liton is beaten. Cut behind point for a single. FOUR! Liton takes a slower one on the full and drives through cover for a delectable boudary. A brace to end the over. Good over for BAN.
BAN 46/2 in 9 overs: Akeal to continue. Another tight over from the off-spinner. Bowls a nagging stump to stump line and skids it full, making it hard to get it away. Just three singles from the over.
BAN 43/2 in 8 overs: Russell to bowl his second. FOUR! Clean hit by Sarkar. Gets on top of the bounce and pulls it hard over mid-wicket and it reaches the boundary on the bounce. A risky couple to end the over.
BAN 34/2 in 7 overs: Akeal Hosein to bowl the first over of spin. Angles it in to Liton and nudged to mid-wicket for a single. Sarkar opens the face to run it past the keeper for one and he’s off the mark. Liton takes single. Angles in to Sarkar and misses the stumps by a whisker. Five singles from the over.
BAN 29/2 in 6 overs: Holder into his third. OUT! Naim chops it on! Slower one, looked to carve it on the off and gets the bottom edge and timber! Sarkar the new man in. Shape it away from him first ball and he is beaten. Three from it and the wicket. Mohammad Naim b Holder 17(19b 2×4 0x6).
BAN 26/1 in 5 overs: Russell is the first bowling change. DROPPED! Short and pulled away hard to mid-wicket. Walsh drops it as it keeps low. OUT! Change of pace as Shakib looks to go over the top. Goes off the top edge as one hands comes off the handle of the bat and easily pouched by Holder mid-off. Liton off the mark with a single. FOUR! Punched away by Naim at mid-wicket. The fielder dives to just miss a catch and it runs away. Shakib c Holder b Russell 9(12b 1×4 0x6).
BAN 20/0 in 4 overs: Holder continues. Bowls into the pitch and the batters cannot find the gaps. Just three singles.
BAN 17/0 in 3 overs: Rampaul continues. FOUR! Naim pulls it away through mid-wicket. Slashed to point for a dot. Tucked away for a single square of the wicket. Two more singles come from the over.
BAN 10/0 in 2 overs: Holder from the other end. Wide on off and Shakib is beaten. Beaten again! Closer to the stumps and fended back. FOUR! Steps out to the pacer and tonks it over extra cover. Single to backward point off a slower one. A single to end the over.
BAN 4/0 in 1 over: Quite a surprise here as Shakib makes his way to the middle to open the batting with Naim. Rampaul with the ball and shaped away from Naim and guided to point for a dot. A quick single to open the account as Naim nudges it to mid-wicket. Shakib drives it to mid-off for another tight single and he jumps up with pain. He seems to be really struggling here and we won’t be seeing too many such singles as long as Shakib is at the crease. Four singles from the over.
BACK TO THE CHASE
Pooran says 142 on this pitch looks like 160. Let’s see how Bangladesh goes about with the chase. Since it is a day game, the dew won’t come much into play so we may see the two teams battle it out on even terms. Mohammad Naim will be key at the top while Shakib’s fitness might be of concern in the middle-order.
WEST INDIES INNINGS
WI 142/7 in 20 overs: Mustafizur to bowl the last over. OUT! Bravo looks to launch it over extra cover and leans back to punch it powerfully. Gets an edge to it and straight to the deep fielder. Pollard comes back to the crease. SIX! Holder times his flick over backward square leg into the stands. SIX! One more over the ropes. Full on the stumps and cleared over deep square leg with a heave. Pollard on strike for the last two. Swing and a miss outside off. SIX! Chips it over mid-wicket for a six. Looked like a deft nudge but the man’s strength saw it sail over the boundary. Good finish for the West Indies. Bravo c Soumya Sarkar b Mustafizur 1(3b 0x4 0x6).
WI 123/6 in 19 overs: OUT! Shoriful gets his man. Kept it full outside off and Pooran lofted it straight to deep square leg. Pooran c Naim b Shoriful 40(22b 1×4 4×6). OUT! Two in two for Shoriful. A hard length on leg-stump coming over the wicket to Chase. He pulls and misses to see his stump cartwheel. Roston Chase b Shoriful 39(46b 2×4 0x6). Holder tucks away the hat-trick ball for a single. Bravo gets off the mark with a leading edge. DROPPED! BAN’s travails in the field continue. Holder makes room on the off and lifts it straight to deep point and spilled!
WI 119/4 in 18 overs: SIX! Mahedi pitches it up to Pooran who makes room smokes it straight over the ropes. Mahedi follows it up with a huge wide on off. SIX! Fourth six for Pooran and down the ground again. Full and follows Pooran’s legs and tucked away for a single to mid-wicket. Two singles to end the over.
WI 103/4 in 17 overs: Shoriful to bowl his second over. Single off the first ball and that’s the hundred for WI. Just four runs from the over.
WI 99/4 in 16 overs: SIX! Pooran slog sweeps behind square for a maximum. SIX! Consecutive sixes off Shakib! Slog sweeps again, slightly more square of the wicket but the result is the same. 15 from the over and WI gets 29 from the last 12 balls.
WI 84/4 in 15 overs: The Fizz to continue. A couple for Pooran through point. FOUR! In the slot and Chase spanks it down the ground to the boundary. FOUR! Width on off and short and Pooran slaps it horizontally to the mid-wicket boundary. Tucked off the pads for a single. Finally a good over for WI. 14 from it.
WI 70/4 in 14 overs: Shakib continues. DROPPED! Mahedi drops one more. Chase slog sweeps to deep mid-wicket and Mahedi spills his second one for the day. Six from the over.
WI 64/4 in 13 overs: Taskin into the attack. Dead straight and Pollard edges it onto his pads. But Mahmudullah has taken the review! Okay, the bat was behind the pads so no bat on it but impact was outside and BAN loses a review. Swings looking to drag an off-side length on the on and gets a bottom edge. Runs in and Taskin lands on the side of the foot and sprawls on the pitch. That looked painful but he is okay to continue. Clipped to mid-wicket for a single by Pollard. And he is walking off the pitch! OUT! Russell departs without facing a ball. Chase hits it straight, Taskin gets a lucky boot on it and it crashes into the stumps as Russell is found outside his crease on the non-striker’s end. Andre Russell run out (Taskin) 0(0b 0x4 0x6). Pooran comes in and two singles to end the over.
WI 61/3 in 12 overs: Shakib continues. Keeps it on the stumps, pegging the right-handers back. A full one wide outside off and Chase reaches out to get the toe end of the wood.
WI 56/3 in 11 overs: Mustafizur to Pollard. Drives to point for single. Wide down leg and that’s a fifty for WI. Back of length and slow; it holds into the pitch and surprises Chase. The ball flies off the edge and just short of midwicket. Two singles and a FOUR! The ball finally sees the other side of the rope. Chase pulls a short one to deep square leg. Does well to close the face of the bat in time and keep it low along the ground.
WI 48/3 in 10 overs: Shakib with his first over. Just four off the over. Pitches it into the pitch and spinning away from the right-handers. He does well to keep it out of Pollard’s arc. But ominous signs for BAN as Shakib winces on releasing the ball. He seems to be struggling with his knee here.
WI 44/3 in 9 overs: Shoriful to continue. Over the wicket to Pollard and it shapes away. The skipper edges it to short third for one. A couple for Chase with a pull to long leg. Astounding that West Indies has the highest percentage of dot balls so far in this tournament. Another dot to end the over.
WI 39/3 in 8 overs: Taskin is back. On the legs and tucked away for a single by Chase. An absolute peach from Taskin. Drags his length back to surprise Pollard. He edges it but it reaches the keeper on the bounce and they steal a single. Pulled away for a couple by Chase.
WI 33/3 in 7 overs: Mahedi to bowl his third. Two singles to start with. DROPPED! Bowled into the pitch and Chase hands it straight to Mahedi who floors it. OUT! Hetmyer falls. Full and he looked to go over long-off but the bat twisted in his hand. Hetmyer c Sarkar b Mahedi 9(7b 1×4 0x6). Skipper Pollard joins Chase. Chase retains strike with a single.
WI 29/2 in 6 overs: Shoriful for his first over. FOUR! Sprayed on the pads and Hetmyer guides it to fine leg for a boundary. Short on leg and it stays low to thud into Chase’s pads. Probably pitching outside leg and they don’t review. Looks to heave it on the leg and misses. LBW appeal again but impact looks outside leg. A single and a brace to end the over.
WI 21/2 in 5 overs: Mahedi back with the ball. Pushed to long-on for a single. Concern for Shakib as he leaves the field. OUT! Gayle is knocked over. Spins into him as he goes for the big shot. Hetmyer joins Chase and clips it on the on-side for a single. Two more singles to end the over. Chris Gayle b Mahedi 4(10b 0x4 0x6).
WI 17/1 in 4 overs: Taskin continues. Roston drives through covers to collect two and open his account in T20Is. Two more next ball through a diving point. Three dots and driven straight for a single to end the over.
WI 12/1 in 3 overs: Mustafizur replaces Mahedi. Nudged to point and Gayle storms for a single and Lewis sends him back this time. Direct-hit and he was gone. Clipped away to mid-on for a single. Pushed off the back-foot by Lewis for one more. Loud LBW appeal but would have gone down leg. Relentless line and length from the Fizz and Lewis fends it back. OUT! Lewis goes. Short and pace-off and Lewis looked to lift it over mid-wicket but got the toe-end of the bat. Went straight up to square leg. Evin Lewis c Rahim b Rahman 6(9b 1×4 0x6).
WI 9/0 in 2 overs: Taskin from the other end. Starts off with a dot. Cut away to backward point for a single. Pull and a miss from Lewis. Short but the ball doesn’t bounce enough. Pushed to mid-off and Gayle doesn’t want the single and sends back Lewis. FOUR! Width on offer and Lewis creams it through extra cover.
WI 4/0 in 1 over: Mahedi to Gayle. First ball. Wide down leg. Yorker and defended back to the bowler. Off the mark with a front-foot drive through cover for a single. Comes back in to Lewis and LBW appeal but turned down. BAN doesn’t go for the review. Lofted by Lewis to long-on for a single. Tucked off his legs for one and Gayle keeps strike.
Teams line-up for the national anthems ahead of the clash. Huge support for Bangladesh at Sharjah, while the colour maroon is few and far between in the stands. Bangladesh in a huddle while Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis make their way to the middle. Liton Das is standing up the stumps so Bangladesh will start with a spinner. Both players take a knee with their fists in the air.
Stay tuned as Bangladesh takes the field against the West Indies in a virtually do-or-die match in 10 minutes from now. Interesting match-up coming up as Chris Gayle opens the batting. Will Bangladesh give the ball to off-spinner Mahedi Hasan to move the ball away from Universe Boss?
Bangladesh Playing XI: Mohammad Naim, Liton Das (wk), Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Soumya Sarkar, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman
West Indies Playing XI: Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard (c), Nicholas Pooran (wk), Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Ravi Rampaul
Bangladesh changes: Soumya Sarkar comes in for Nurul Hasan and Nasum Ahmed makes way for Taskin Ahmed.
West Indies changes: Roston Chase comes in for Lendl Simmons. Jason Holder replaces Hayden Walsh. Pollard says ‘Universe Boss’ will open the batting.
PITCH REPORT: It’s a new pitch being used for today’s match. The ball will keep low and slow and spinners are expected to play a pivotal role. Attacking the stumps will be key on this wicket. With relatively shorter boundaries square of the wicket – 61m and 69m – the power-hitters from the Caribbean might just come to the party today. However, they will have the top-class spin of Shakib Al Hasan to contend with upfront.
Chasing will continue to be advantageous. Teams batting second have won 11 games in Sharjah this year while only four times teams have defended targets successully. Average first innings score at the venue is 136.
STAT ALERT: Shakib Al Hasan needs two wickets to complete 400 wickets in all T20s. Only Dwayne Bravo (551), Sunil Narine (425), Imran Tahir (420) are ahead of him.
Bangladesh Predicted XI: Mohammed Naim, Liton Das, Shakib al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (wk), Mahedi Hasan, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman
West Indies Predicted XI: Evin Lewis, Lendl Simmons, Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran(w), Kieron Pollard (c), Andre Russell, Jason Holder, Dwayne Bravo, Akeal Hosein, Ravi Rampaul

MATCH PREVIEW:
After back-to-back defeats, defending champion West Indies needs to defeat Bangladesh here on Friday to keep its hopes of qualifying for the semifinals alive.
Not having won a single game in the UAE so far – not even in warm-ups – Kieron Pollard’s men will be keen to turn the tide. They will first need to sort out their batting problems.
Against England, they were bowled out for 55 and all their batters seemed to throw away their wickets going for big shots. In the second game, against South Africa, Lendl Simmons was chosen to anchor the innings but the move didn’t work as the opener was painfully slow, managing 16 off 35 balls. It meant other batters – including Evin Lewis, who hit a quick-fire half-century – took risks and lost their wickets.
Going ahead, Simmons could be replaced by Roston Chase, who anchored the innings well while scoring an unbeaten 54 in the warm-up match against Afghanistan. A useful bowler, Chase can also give the team another spin bowling option.
The West Indian bowlers have also looked ordinary with not enough runs to defend. Only left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein has impressed.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, has given a better account of itself at the T20 World Cup, challenging Sri Lanka in a close battle here on Sunday. Like West Indies, it is yet to notch up a single win in the competition and will need to win to prevent an early exit.
A special performance from Shakib Al Hasan could make the difference between the two sides.
