Cleaner was arrested at the home of the Israeli Defense Minister on November 4 after his relationship with the hacking team began.
Israeli authorities have accused a cleaner who worked at the home of Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz of offering espionage in favor of Black Shadow hackers, a group allegedly linked to Iran.
Omri Goren Gorochovsky, a 37-year-old resident of the central city of Lod, was arrested on November 4 according to an indictment released by the Israeli Ministry of Justice on Thursday.
An arrest warrant against Gorochovsky said he had an extensive criminal history, including five sentences and jail time, including bank robbery, for bank robbery, questioning how he was hired to work in the home of one of Israel’s top security officials.
Israel’s home intelligence agency Shin Bet said Gorochovsky began contacting an unnamed “Iranian entity” through social media, sending photos of various items from Gantz’s home, including computer photos. Gorochovsky added that he had never gained access to “classified materials”.
Gorochovsky allegedly contacted the Black Shadow by Telegram on or about October 31 with an offer to provide information from Gantz’s home.
Using a false name, the suspect “identified himself as someone who worked at the home of the Israeli Defense Minister, and stated that he had the ability to assist the team in a variety of ways.”
According to the indictment, Gorochovsky told a Black Shadow representative that he would send it via malware that he proposed to implement “for a sum of money” with a USB device.
Shin Bet said the espionage attempt was quickly thwarted, Gorochovsky contacted Black Shadow and was arrested for a few days.
On Gorochovsky’s charge sheet, the Black Shadow is described as “affiliated with Iran.”
Late last month, Black Shadow hackers called for a cyberattack on an Israeli Internet service provider that attracted media attention.
The hacking team has not acknowledged any links to Iran.
In his 2019 election campaign, Gantz warned that Iranian intelligence had hacked his mobile phone, putting “his personal data and addresses in the hands of enemies”.
A statement from Gantz’s campaign at the time leaked to his opponents to damage his political offer.
