President Joe Biden wants to set aside the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland) in January, a meeting of global political and economic elites that many of his predecessors decided not to attend.

Biden will send administrative officials to meetings at the Swiss ski resort, according to two friends who know the subject. In recent years, in the absence of a U.S. president, the delegation has had senior officials working in economic affairs and trade.

White House spokesmen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Biden’s decision to skip meetings deflects former President Donald Trump’s approach. Trump went twice while in office, in 2018 and 2020, breaking the long absence of U.S. presidents. He planned to leave in 2019, but canceled that trip due to a partial closure by the U.S. government.

Barack Obama, George W. Bush and George HW Bush were never present during their presidency. Bill Clinton once served as president in 2000 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the meeting, although he has attended regularly since he resigned.

The personal event is scheduled for Jan. 17-21 and is designed to “address the economic, environmental, political and social flaws that have exacerbated the pandemic,” organizers said. A meeting in Davos was held almost at the beginning of the year.
