Chris Silverwood is sure to turn the English Ashes campaign around

England coach Chris Silverwood has said he is the right person for the job and is confident he will turn the team’s fortunes around after suffering major defeats in the first two sets of the Ashes against Australia.

England lost their first test in Brisbane by nine wickets and suffered a 275-run defeat in the second round in Adelaide, trailing 2-0 in the five-round series.

Asked if his position was in jeopardy, as England have only won one of their last 11 races, Silverwood told the British media on Tuesday: “It’s always like that. When you take a job like this, you accept that. That’s it. I wouldn’t take the job first. You’re under constant pressure.

“I think I can turn that around. We’ve had these honest conversations and I think I have the right coach around me to make that happen.”

Silverwood and Joe Root chose the spinner Jack Leach on a green Brisbane surface and then a full-seam attack on a flat field in Adelaide. Silverwood took some responsibility for the two defeats, but denied that England had made the wrong choice.

“No, I didn’t (I admit we were wrong). We chose the best attack for those conditions and you look at the attack we did, it’s a great experience,” Silverwood said.

Silverwood said England, who have not won an Australian Ashes series since 2010-11, should play better in the remaining three races, starting with the Boxing Day test in Melbourne on Sunday.

“We talked very well about what was needed in the locker room … We need to be better, it’s as simple as that,” he said.

“It’s not just a bat and a bowling alley. Look at how many chances we have left on the pitch: down catches, missed escapes and everything else.

“Wickets without balls are unacceptable. It’s a basic mistake … We’ve had one-on-one collapses. We’ve talked about both in these games. We’ve had collapses before and we can’t do that.”
