2022 Australian Open: Serena Williams will not play in the tournament due to injury

After Serena Williams ’name was not on the 2022 Australian Open registration list, the 23-time Grand Slam winner confirmed she would not be taking part in the tournament next month. According to the official Australian Open website, Williams has stated that he will not be playing in the Grand Slam tournament and is instead “following the advice of his medical team”.

Williams is still recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in his first return match at Wimbledon in July.

“This is never an easy decision to make, I’m not where I need to be to physically compete,” Williams said he told the Australian Open website. “Melbourne is one of my favorite places to visit and I hope to play in the AO every year. I will miss seeing the fans, but I look forward to coming back and competing at my highest level.”

Williams has had great success at the Australian Open in the past. The 40-year-old won the last Grand Slam title of his career at the 2017 Australian Open and has won the tournament a total of seven times.

At the 2021 Australian Open, Williams reached the finals against Naomi Osaka before falling in straight sets.

Williams is not the first star of women’s tennis to lose the tournament. On Monday, Bianca Andreescu won the 2019 US Open. he announced that he was taking a mental break from the sport and will sit at the start of the 2022 season, which includes the Australian Open.
