Brazil and Argentina WC Qualifier suspended for “serious mistakes”

The referee and the Video Assistance Referee (VAR), who competed in the World Cup qualifiers between Brazil and Argentina on Tuesday, have been punished for “serious mistakes”, the South American football governing body CONMEBOL said.

A goalless draw incident in which Argentine defender Nicolas Otamendi appeared to elbow Raphinha – the Brazilian winger left his mouth bleeding – went unpunished and CONMEBOL said using his arm was “violent behavior”.

Brazilian coach Tite was on fire and was outraged when the VAR said it was an “unexpected” decision, saying it was “impossible” for the VAR not to see Raphinha’s elbow.

“The actions of Chief Judge Andres Ismael Cunha Soca Vargas and Esteban Daniel Ostojich Vega … were technically examined … they concluded that serious and obvious errors had been made,” CONMEBOL said in a statement.

CONMEBOL added that the two officials have been suspended “indefinitely”.

A 0-0 draw has left Argentina with Brazil to qualify for Qatar’s World Cup next year.
