Burkina Faso president releases prime minister over security crisis | Politics News

The West African nation is struggling to withstand attacks by groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS).

Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kabore removed his prime minister from office on Wednesday to escalate the security crisis that has left thousands dead and street protests.

One of the poorest countries in West Africa since 2016 has been attacked by groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIL) (ISIL), killing 2,000 people and forcing more than a million people to flee their homes.

Anger has spread since a group of al-Qaeda-linked groups killed 49 military policemen and four civilians last month, putting pressure on Kabori to make changes.

He has already changed his army leadership.

The presidential office said Kabor had received a letter of resignation from Prime Minister Christophe Dabire.

Following the December 8 resignation letter, the President “ends the duties of Prime Minister Christophe Joseph Marie Dabire,” said Government Secretary-General Stephane Wenceslas Sanou after reading the decree on public television.

The resignation of a prime minister requires the resignation of the entire government, in accordance with the law of Burkina Faso.

However, the foreign government will have to remain in office until a new one is completed, Sanour said.

Dabire was prime minister in early 2019 and was re-elected in January 2021 after being re-elected president for his second and final term.

Burkina Faso is in the midst of a fierce armed uprising that has also hit large parts of neighboring Mali and Niger.

Despite efforts by former French colonial authorities and other regional armies to resist the attacks, they have continued unabated.
