KHARTUME (Reuters) – Sudan’s military plans to reinstate ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdo after weeks of unrest have sparked Sudan’s military plans, Fadlallah Burma Nasir Umma Party leader told Reuters.

Hamdo will form an independent cabinet of technocrats and release all political detainees under an agreement between the military and civilian political parties, said Nasir, who was involved in the negotiations that led to the agreement.

The Sovereign Council will hold an urgent meeting on Sunday before announcing the deal, a source familiar with the talks said.

It was not clear that part of the civil coalition of the Freedom and Change Forces that was sharing power with the military would be part of the agreement.

Activist groups leading the protests since the coup have called for the military to be completely removed from politics.

They could not immediately speak to media adviser to military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

When the military took power on October 25, Hamdo was placed under house arrest, in 2019 unjustifying the transition to democracy agreed upon after the ouster of Omar al-Bashir from his long autocratic rule.

The military disbanded Hamdok’s cabinet and arrested some high-ranking civilians following an agreement to share power with the military after Bashir’s ouster.

After the coup, Hamdo called for the release of all political detainees and the return of power-sharing as a precondition for negotiations, according to sources close to him.

The coup sparked a campaign of mass anti-military demonstrations, and activists called for more protests on Sunday.

The Western powers that supported Sudan’s political transition refused to accept it and suspended some economic aid to Sudan.
