PARIS (Reuters) – World food prices fell four times a month in December, but were up 28% from 2021, the highest level since 2011, the UN food agency said on Thursday.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) food price index, which tracks the world’s highest marketed international food prices, averaged 133.7 points last month compared to the November 134.9 revision.
Previously the November figure was given as 134.4.
For the whole of 2021, the benchmark index averaged 125.7 points, up 28.1% from 2020 and the highest in 2011 from 131.9.
The monthly index has been at its 10-year high, reflecting setbacks and high demand over the past year. [GRA/]
With the exception of dairy products, prices for all categories of the food price index fell in December, the agency said, while vegetable oils and sugar fell sharply.
However, all categories had major increases over 2021, he added.
High food prices have also contributed to the broader rise in inflation, as economic activity has recovered from the coronavirus crisis.
The FAO warns that higher food costs in import-dependent countries are jeopardizing poorer populations.
