A canteen building in southwest China collapsed after an explosion allegedly caused by a gas leak.
A building that houses a canteen in southwest China’s Chongqing has collapsed in a gas-fired explosion, killing at least 16 people, CCTV reported on Friday.
At midnight on Friday (1600 GMT) 26 people were taken from the site, 16 of whom were killed, the announcer said on Saturday.
One person was in serious condition and the other injured were also trapped in the concrete after the explosion at the hospital.
The Ministry of Emergency Management sent a team of more than 600 workers to the Wulong district of Chongqing, CCTV said.
Images released by the Xinhua news agency showed heavy equipment lifting concrete slabs from the site of the explosion.
In other pictures, rescue workers and military-clad men were seen digging through the rubble and carrying some wounded.
According to Xinhua’s Globalink global service, the blast occurred while people were eating lunch. The report says they are now investigating the cause of the explosion.
Construction and industrial accidents are not uncommon in China, with managers often cutting corners, laxing safety standards and damaging infrastructure.
A landslide killed at least 14 people at a construction site in southwest China’s Guizhou province on Monday.
At least 18 people were killed in December After being trapped in a mine in Chongqing, the second accident in the region took more than two months.
In July, 14 workers were killed in Guangdong province in southern China after a tunnel was being built.
