A veteran news anchor was released for helping defend his brother Andrew Cuomo and former New York governor against sexual assault claims.
CNN has released reporter and reporter Chris Cuomo as part of an investigation into his efforts to help his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, deal with allegations of sexual misconduct.
Speaking on Saturday, the network said “additional information” had emerged in the investigation into Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s case.
Cuomo, 51, presented CNN’s most-watched first-hour news program extended on Tuesday.
He admitted in May that he had broken some rules of the cable news network to advise his brother on how to handle allegations from a public relations perspective.
Andrew Cuomo, 63, was forced to leave step down in August as governor after several allegations of sexual misconduct. He has denied any wrongdoing.
In a statement, CNN said: “Chris Cuomo was suspended this week, pending clarification on his involvement in the defense of his brother.”
“We took a respected law firm to do the review, and we immediately canceled it,” he added.
The network did not provide details of the new information.
In a statement on Twitter, Cuomo said he was disappointed.
“It’s not like I want to end my time on CNN, but I’ve already told you why and how I helped my brother,” he said.
In journalism, it is considered an ethical offense to use one’s position to defend a personal cause or to conduct research for personal reasons.
Chris Cuomo was initially suspended after New York Attorney General Letitia James showed texts and other messages in which she sought to use her sources in the media to find out about the case and the women involved.
On October 29, Andrew Cuomo filed a criminal complaint alleging a sex crime in a New York court.
Democrat Andrew Cuomo gained national fame at the COVID-19 rally last year on how New York coped with the pandemic, and then appeared frequently in his brother’s session.
Chris Cuomo, who was positive for coronavirus and at one point was self-isolated in his basement, almost attended a conference his brother was giving to other journalists.
The father of two brothers, Mario Cuomo, was also governor of New York.
