Abiy Ahmed apologized to political prisoners and called for a “national dialogue”, but airstrikes continue to kill civilians.
The Ethiopian government appears to be providing an olive branch to end the conflict in the northern Tigray region for more than a year.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is releasing several prominent political prisoners, including the leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front rebel.
Abiy says this will pave the way for a national dialogue for lasting peace.
But some government critics called it a publicity stunt, especially as a government airstrike killed at least 56 internally displaced people near the Eritrean border.
So how real is Abiy’s offer of a peaceful solution?
