Dozens of people have been killed in a devastating gold mine in West Sudan’s Kordofan province, according to the country’s state-owned mining company.
Sudanese Mineral Resources Company Limited said in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday that the closure of a non-functioning mine was in the town of Fuja, in the municipality of En Nahud, about 700 kilometers (435 miles) south of the capital Khartoum. . He said at least 31 people were killed and injured, but no details were given. It was later reported that the death toll was 38.
Local media reported that several wells in the Darsaya mine had collapsed, and in addition to the dead, at least eight injured had been taken to a local hospital.
The mining company also published images showing citizens gathering at the site to find at least two dredgers who could survive and find the bodies.

The company said the mine was not operational but local miners returned to work after security forces guarding the site left the area. He did not say when the mine stopped working.
Collapses are common in gold mines in Sudan, where safety regulations are not very strong.
