The Argentine Pekerman takes charge of Venezuela

[ad_1]

Former Argentine and Colombian coach Jose Pekerman has been appointed to manage Venezuela, the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) announced on Tuesday.

Venezuela is the only country in South America that has never reached the World Cup finals and has seven points from 14 matches in last place in the 10-team standings.

Venezuela is currently 10 points behind Colombia in fourth place and Peru fifth.

With the top four teams automatically qualifying for Qatar, Pekerman has little chance of taking his new charges to the Qatar 2022 final, but he said he has arrived “full of hope”.

“I know I’m in the right place,” the 72-year-old Argentine told reporters on Tuesday.

Pekerman is one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the region, having spent time in clubs in Argentina, Chile and Mexico.

He has also led Argentina, which led him to the 2006 World Cup, and led Colombia to the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He will be the fourth coach in Venezuela since the start of the Qatar qualifiers after the interim coach Rafael Dudamel, Jose Peseiro and Leo Gonzalez.

FVF president Jorge Gimenez said Pekerman’s appointment of a five-year contract was “a moment of transformation for our national football”.
