Former England player Paul Collingwood has been named the team’s interim coach for the three-match West Indies test tour next Monday.

Collingwood assistant coach will replace Chris Silverwood after a 4-0 defeat to Australian Ashes, who was released last week.

Collingwood, 45, who took charge of the T20I West Indies tour in England last month, is resting in Barbados, but will reunite with the players on February 25 when they arrive in Antigua.

“I am really excited to lead the Test team for the Caribbean tour,” the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

“I can’t wait to get started. Having a difficult series of tests against the West Indies allows us to restore and rebuild directly behind the despair of the Ashes.

“Playing test matches for England is the biggest reward in the game. My goal is to give players clarity, direction and encouragement to start building something special.

“I have spoken to Joe Root (captain) and (vice-captain) Ben Stokes and they are both excited and passionate about moving the team forward in this new cycle.

Collingwood played 68 tests, 197 single-day internationals and 36 T20Is for England.

The tour group is due to be announced later this week. The first test in Antigua will begin on March 1.
