If you are a 3 or 4 year old engineering student or are pursuing your postgraduate studies in Southeast Asia, this competition is a challenge for you.
The edotco Infrastructure Design Competition calls on students to work on ideas the next generation communication tower. This could include the use of alternative materials, optimizing or reinventing the design of the steel structure until the areas where the towers are built are improved.
with the subject of “Infrastructure of tomorrow: designing the future”, students can participate in planning real change without even having to wait until they finish their studies.
Kuala Lumpur is headquartered in Asia and currently operates or manages more than 41,000 towers across Asia. This design challenge has real-world implications: your plan can see the light of day and expand into this region.
As a key part of edotco’s nature is to conduct business responsibly and sustainably, this is also an important element of the competition.
Sustainability as a focus
one of the previous tower structures renovated by edotco is a bamboo telecommunication tower. Developed in collaboration With Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, bamboo is used as a substitute for traditional steel structures.
Not only is bamboo a renewable material, but it is also capable of withstanding its stiffness and tensile strength and withstanding tensile strength, and can withstand gusts of up to 210 km / h. The team behind it is estimated to last approximately 10 years, with proper maintenance.
“The use of bamboo to build towers is to reduce its dependence on steel by 80% and reduce the carbon footprint of each site by 70%.” said an edotco representative.
As part of its commitment to green solutions, Edotco hopes to repeat the experience of taking advantage of the variability and creativity of young minds to develop such telecommunications infrastructures.
Sustainability is more than defending a particular material, and edotcorena efforts in favor of green engineering such as the development of a healthy environment and a wealthy community in the areas around their tower sites.
They have provided communities with access to electricity and clean water, turned on cooling systems for vaccine storage, and even established a WiFi connection at a local library.

Now that you know the importance of green factors in your tower design, here are some other things to keep in mind.
Details of the competition and other things to know
With UKM’s academic partner, edotco will conduct mentoring sessions to train and mentor participants throughout the competition to ensure that the results match the expectations of the trial.

More than 100 submissions are expected from the entire SEA, and the steps to take part in the competition are as follows:
- Form Groups 2 and 4 composed of participants at least one Civil Engineering student.
- Once registered, design a tower and foundation based on the criteria of next-generation telecommunications infrastructure. Technical Framework. Please note that submissions must be in English.
- The teams behind the Top 5 works will be presented to a panel of judges, edotco, industry experts and UKM academics, in the virtual Grand Final (March 2022)
- The 3 winners with innovative ideas will win a total of $ 5,000 in cash prizes.
In terms of designs, you should also consider the following 4 columns: innovation, cost-effectiveness, feasibility and functionality, and respect for the environment.
So for any student who is eager to see that your ideas go beyond theoretical drawings, this is your chance to connect with industry leaders by creating innovative solutions for gaining knowledge and technology exposure.
- Register for the contest here and find out more details here. The deadline for submissions is January 30, 2022.
