England batsman Jonny Bairstow recalled that Joe Root lamented the loss of the draw, as the tour team was once again cheap to throw Ashes hopes on the first day of the third test against Australia.
Sent out to bat on the grassy Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, England came out with 185, with captain Root (50) only able to withstand the hosts ’attack for half a century.

England failed to reach 300 in the series, with 236 first-place finishes in the second round in Adelaide, where they lost by 275 races.
“When you look at the lottery, of course, it didn’t go our way,” Bairstow told reporters.
“In that first session we would also look for a bowling alley.
“We’re still looking for that high score, but both teams wanted to throw first on that field this morning, with the help of the conditions and a touch of green.”
After losing 2-0 in Brisbane, England must win in Melbourne to keep the five-match series alive.
Australia, on the other hand, only need a draw to keep the ballot box.
The Aussie were 61 for the end of the first day, with Marcus Harris 20 not out and night guard Nathan Lyon still unscored.
The only team has a 2-0 win over Ashes: Don Bradman’s Australia on home soil in 1936/37.

Root, Ben Stokes all-rounder and Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler fell short of chances, ending hopes of regaining England’s respectable overall, after Australian captain Pat Cummins broke with three wickets.
“We need to get a little stronger and harder with our releases,” said Bairstow, who struggled at 35 before Mitchell Starc was trying to forget a short ball before he was caught.
“We know that, we’ve talked about that.
“It simply came to our notice then.
“People have studied techniques and game plans for the best way to score runs, but in the end it’s about spending time in the middle.”
