West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice has left the England national team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino due to illness, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.
England, with 20 points, who are in first place in Group I – more than three over Poland – will take on Albania in eight matches on Friday before heading to San Marino on Monday to end their qualifying campaign.
“West Ham United can confirm that Declan Rice has returned to the club from England on international duty due to illness,” the club said in a statement, adding that the illness had nothing to do with COVID-19.

“He will now recover before returning to training at Rush Green on Saturday 20 November ahead of the Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Hammers Premier League game.”
England said they would not call a replacement for the 22-year-old, but added that midfielder Mason Mount and left-back Luke Shaw had not yet joined the team due to dental surgery and concussions, respectively.
Rice, the 27-time champion with the national team, has been a regular since he debuted in 2019 under coach Gareth Southgate. He played seven matches for England in the 2020 Euro Cup, where he lost to Italy in the final.
