England vs Sri Lanka Highlights, T20 World Cup 2021: ENG beats SL by 26 runs, is all but through to the semifinal

[ad_1]

Welcome to the highlights of the T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12 match between England and Sri Lanka. This was Santadeep Dey, bringing you all the action as it unfolded at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

ENG vs SL HIGHLIGHTS

JOS BUTTLER HAS BEEN ADJUDGED PLAYER OF THE MATCH.

I found it really tough early on in the innings. There was a point when we were thinking to get to the 120-run mark, but then we got going and got 160-plus. We were under pressure for a long part of that chase knowing that Moeen had to bowl that over so to take that wicket there was crucial and I was delighted with that.”

RESULT: ENGLAND WINS BY 26 RUNS TO CONSOLIDATE ITS SPOT AT THE TOP OF GROUP 1. THE SIDE IS ALL BUT THROUGH TO THE SEMIS EVEN AS SRI LANKA STAND ON THE VERY BRINK OF ELIMINATION.

SRI LANKA INNINGS

SL 137 in 19 overs: Moeen into the attack; ideally won’t be pitching any of those up. This is the over the Lankans need to target. Only that it maybe a tad bit too late. Karunaratne picks out Roy now, gone for nought. It is all but over. Four wickets have fallen for five runs. Sri Lanka now needs 30 off 10. AND TAKEN! Jordan takes the simplest of catches near the ropes to send off Theekshana.

SL 134/8 in 18 overs: Buttler pulls another rabbit out of the hat! Excellent game awareness by the England glovesman as he sends Shanaka back, courtesy a run out. Shanaka taps one to Buttler’s right and hops down the track. Buttler, quick on his feet, has made a mess of the Zingers before one could bat an eye. Mickey Arthur can’t believe it. Neither can the Lankan fans. Chameera walks in. Edged and four… streaky! The Lankans will happily take that. And another! Chameera holes out to Malan in the deep. Looked like he had got enough on that when it came off the bat.

SL 130/6 in 17 overs: Woah! Just a bit of turn out of nowhere to keep Livingstone interested. It takes Hasaranga by a little surprise too. Sliced over point, this time, by Hasaranga to bring up four runs. WICKET! Hasaranga departs for 34 as Roy and Billings complete an excellent relay catch in the deep. Roy throws it to Billings moments before his left leg touches the ropes. Karunaratne walks to the crease.

SL 123/5 in 16 overs: Just in from the ENG dressing room: Mills has an issue with his right quad. Jordan and Morgan, are meanwhile, engaged in a conversation with the umpire regarding the seam of the ball, which is now completely wet and slippery owing to the excess dew. A lot of work is being put into that ball now after every delivery. Hasaranga picks one up through cover to bring up four more.

SL 113/5 in 15 overs: Excellent work from Livingstone, at least until the fourth ball. The next delivery was banged in short, doesn’t skid on as much as Livingstone would have expected it to and Shanaka has hit it over the cow corner for six.

SL 103/5 in 14 overs: Mills runs in from around the wicket and Hasaranga has tonked his very first delivery 91m away straight over the bowler’s head. Wide now. Ooooh, close! The ball flies just out of Buttler’s reach to roll down to the fence. Mills pulls up during his run-up. This is bad news for England as Mills has had a lengthy history with injuries. He walks off the ground. Woakes to complete his over – three balls remaining. Meanwhile, Billings replaces Mills on the field.

SL 89/5 in 13 overs: Hasaranga pounces onto Livingstone’s first delivery of the over to slap it behind point for four.

SL 82/5 in 12 overs: Rashid to bowl out. A wonderful spell (4-0-19-2) comes to an end with a single. Five runs off this over.

SL 77/5 in 11 overs: Woakes is back. 12 runs in the first over, a dropped catch, the day has been very un-Woakesish. And it gets only worse as Rajapaksa stands and delivers… SIX! Four, next, through wide mid-off as Woakes slightly overpitches. Woakes has the last laugh though as Rajapaksa perishes, while trying to find the fence again! Hits it straight to Roy at long-on. Hasaranga in at 7.

SL 66/4 in 10 overs: Mills is into the attack. A run off a leg bye; there was a half-hearted appeal from Mills but HawkEye shows it would have gone on to miss the woodwork. Four from Shanaka, smart batting this. Uses the pace on the ball to guide it towards the ropes at backward point.

SL 58/4 in 9 overs: Jordan traps Avishka plumb in front of the sticks as Sri Lanka slips further.

SL 54/3 in 8 overs: Woakes drops a regulation catch. Yes. Woakes of all people. The safest of hands in the field but the ball’s gone slippery with the dew. Rajapaksa heaves a sigh of relief.

SL 50/3 in 7 overs: Livingstone’s flighted delivery has been dispatched out of the ground by Rajapaksa. Fifty up for the Lankans with a single off the last delivery.

SL 40/3 in 6 overs: Perera falls while trying to go big off a Rashid googly. Slices, miscues and Morgan makes no mistake. Rajapaksa gets a little bit of room and he goes hard at the ball to pick up a boundary.

SL 34/2 in 5 overs: Jordan replaces Moeen. Fernando steps down and smokes him through the covers for four and gets a single to move off strike. Perera retains strike with a single as six runs come off the over.

SL 28/2 in 4 overs: Rashid into the attack. OUT! Straight up in the air and taken at extra cover. Asalanka steps out to toss Rashid over long-on and gets a leading edge on it. Rashid sets this up with some sharp wrong’uns before floating one in to induce the error.

SL 24/1 in 3 overs: Asalanka on fire! Moeen strays onto the pads and Asalanka puts the sweep to good effect. He beats the square leg twice to find a couple of fours and Sri Lanka continues to cash in on the PowerPlay.

SL 13/1 in 2 overs: Woakes from the other end. Asalanka bides no time as he charges and smokes Woakes over mid-wicket for SIX! He charges against a slightly fuller delivery and this time it clips the inside edge and runs down for four.

SL 2/1 in 1 over: Moeen to Perera. Mix-up, mix-up and Nissanka is run out! Perera nudges one to the on-side and sets off on a rather crazy single. Easy for Morgan as he flashes the ball to Buttler who flicks the bails with Nissanka well short of his crease.

Back for the chase. Nissanka and Perera at the crease. Moeen with the ball.

TARGET: SRI LANKA NEEDS 164 TO WIN

ENG vs SL: Jos Buttler slams first century of T20 World Cup 2021

ENG 163/4 in 20 overs: A full toss by Chameera and Buttler unleashes the scoop. SIX! He is on 91. Buttler gets a top-edge. This has gone high up. And Nissanka has spilled it. The dew is doing some serious damage now. Chameera thought he had his man… Buttler on 95. One ball remaining. Can he go all the way? HE DOES!!! A full toss is what Chameera sends in allowing Buttler to finish it off in style. This is Buttler’s maiden T20I hundred.

ENG 149/4 in 19 overs: Bowled off the googly! Good comeback from Hasaranga after being hit for a six by Morgan off the very first delivery. This is the spinner’s 50th T20I wicket. Moeen gets a promotion ahead of Livingstone, probably because of his strength against spin bowling.

ENG 141/3 in 18 overs: Buttler on the charge. After a single, Buttler first takes Shanaka for a ride through the longer side of the ground. Goes over long-on next to pocket six more. Buttler, on 81 now, has registered the highest score in this edition of the T20 WC. Four down leg next, and this is now Buttler’s best score in the format.

ENG 122/3 in 17 overs: Morgan pulls into the stands — a mighty blow from the England captain to welcome Chameera back. Chameera bowls a wide as he spots Buttler shuffling across during his run-up.

ENG 110/3 in 16 overs: The captain is set to bowl. Morgan is sizing up the shorter leg-side boundary. However, Shanaka squeezes in a good over to concede only five runs.

ENG 105/3 in 15 overs: Maximum! Inside out over extra cover goes Morgan. That hit brings up the fifty-run partnership as well. Buttler joins the party next. Another six as Kumara errs to pitch it right onto Buttler’s hitting arc. The pressure is getting to Kumara, who strays down leg. Wide, would have to reload. Buttler goes downtown again to bring the 100 up for England.

ENG 83/3 in 14 overs: Fifty for Buttler off 45 balls – slowest by an England batter in T20 WCs. Relates the story of how difficult it has been for the ENG batters, thus far. Four! Full toss on the leg stump line and Morgan sweeps to glory.

ENG 75/3 in 13 overs: The strong bottom hand comes into play as Buttler sits deep in his crease to hammer Karunaratne through deep mid-wicket. Woah! Muscles a six next over the same region.

ENG 61/3 in 12 overs: Theekshana to bowl out. A single to long-off from Buttler to pick the first run in the over off the third ball. The carrom ball almost gets rid of Morgan. Zips into Morgan, who just manages to keep it off the stumps. Theekshana finishes with 4-0-13-0; wicketless but economical.

ENG 59/3 in 11 overs: Some genuine pace on the ball again and Buttler finds his feet. A gentle push through the covers off Kumara fetches him four. Buttler gently pushes the ball to the on-side and sneaks in two runs. Excellent running from Jos and Morgan there. They are trying to swiftly change gears now.

ENG 47/3 in 10 overs: Buttler attempts to charge Theekshana who deftly slips in the quicker one to keep him in his tracks. England has struggled to adapt from its quick road to Sharjah from Dubai.

ENG 44/3 in 9 overs: Karunaratne stuns Buttler with a sharp in-decker. Hits the pads and Sri Lanka opts for the review as Rod Tucker denies their cries. Replays show that he’s right as the ball misses the stumps by a fair margin. Karunaratne continues to operate slyly throughout as he gives no room for Buttler while also mixing it up on the tacky surface.

ENG 40/3 in 8 overs: Theekshana fires in to Morgan’s shaky defence and attempts get him caught in front. Morgan wobbles but gets off strike with a single. Theekshana surprises Buttler with a slower one, delicately wafted in to keep him rooted to the crease.

ENG 37/3 in 7 overs: Kumara to bowl. The ball is skidding onto the batter alright as was predicted during the pitch report. Morgan, new to the crease, is struggling to connect. Just a single off that over.

ENG 36/3 in 6 overs: Shanaka goes upstairs after the umpire doesn’t seem to be too interested in an LBW appeal for Bairstow’s wicket. The England batter was advancing down the pitch, which may have turned the initial decision in ENG’s favour. The giant screen shows three reds. The ball would have gone to hit middle and leg. OUT! A first-ball duck for Bairstow as Morgan and Buttler pair.

Hasaranga has now taken the highest number of wickets in a calendar year – 33 in 2021.

ENG 34/2 in 5 overs: Buttler attempts a scoop off Chameera but misses all of it. A watchful start, this, from England today. Chameera tries to get one to angle across to the left-handed Malan, but the England batter clears the fence with finesse. Ouch… Another day, another catch dropped by SL ‘keeper Perera. Malan gets another life. But Chameera strikes off the very next ball! The Zingers are up as Malan saunters back to the dugout.

ENG 29/1 in 4 overs: Theekshana replaces Hasaranga. This is a top start for Theekshana. He pins Buttler to the crease with a sharp, tight line, forcing him to charge forward to find a single.

ENG 25/1 in 3 overs: Kumara replaces Chameera. Short and wide outside off and Buttler smashes the ball for four through point. Kumara comes up wiith an excellent comeback delivery. A sharp nip-backer clips the inside-edge off Buttler and trickles down to the fine leg boundary.

ENG 15/1 in 2 overs: The field restrictions are on with only two fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle in the first six overs. Sri Lanka has placed a fielder at cow corner and another at long-off. This means Buttler now has a free pass to go over long-on. GONE! Hasaranga castles Roy. Goes for the big slog and perishes. Malan is in.

ENG 12/0 in 1 over: Roy opens his account straightaway with a flick towards backward square for a couple of runs. Goes for a lovely drive through cover next to bring up the first four of the innings. Buttler’s up and running too with three runs. Through cover again, it is a quick outfield but both of England’s openers are excellent runners between the wickets.

Buttler and Roy to open for England. Chameera will be starting things off for the Lankans. Both teams take a knee, united in their stand against racism.

– 07:24 PM IST: Time for the national anthems. Sri Lanka is up first.

WHAT THEY SAID

Eoin Morgan: “We would have done the exact same thing. It’s a different challenge tonight. We are playing the same team. Don’t want to change things much until we are sure of qualification.”

Dasun Shanaka – “We will bowl first. The wicket looks better, dew might come in later. We’re going with the same team. Batting has been a bit of a concern for us. We definitely have the advantage of having played over here.”

ENG vs SL PITCH REPORT

“A standard Sharjah wicket. There’s a nice sheen to it which means the ball will skid. Decent sized boundaries and the pitch was watered last night. There is a bit in it for the bowlers,” reckon Shane Watson and Niall O’Brien.

ENG vs SL MATCH PREVIEW

A rampaging England is expected to brush aside a struggling Sri Lanka and seal a spot in the semifinals when the two teams meet in a Group 1 match of the T20 World Cup, on Monday.

Pre-tournament favourite England has played as per the expectations in its first three games, steamrolling its opponents, including arch-rival Australia on Saturday night.

The Eoin Morgan-led side, which is heavily driven by data and match-ups, seems to have all bases covered and backup plans in place even though it has not needed one yet.

Its big margin of victory in all three games has meant that the middle-order has not been tested yet but Morgan is confident they will deliver when the times comes.

He opened the bowling with Adil Rashid on Saturday and not Moeen Ali, considering Aaron Finch’s struggles against the leggie. Moeen did not need to bowl at all.

Pacer Chris Woakes was brilliant with the new ball and Chris Jordan too came to the party with triple strikes. Death overs specialist Tymal Mills was a tad expensive against Australia but he has been able to pick wickets throughout the tournament.

Part time spinner Liam Livingstone too has done a good job for the team, providing Morgan another valuable bowling resource.

Sri Lanka will have to produce something special to halt England’s juggernaut at Sharjah. Considering its inexperience, Sri Lanka has not played too badly and the final-over finish against South Africa could have gone either way.

Unfortunately for the side, it was its second loss in three games and it must win against England to keep itself in the competition.

Charith Asalanka has been in sublime form and from Sri Lanka’s point of view, it was good to see opener Pathum Nissanka belting the South African attack. If the batters do better, the bowlers showed on Saturday afternoon that it is capable of defending decent totals.

The bowlers did well to keep Sri Lanka in the game for the major part of the innings until they were undone by David Miller’s six-hitting prowess in the 20th over.

Barring the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka game, the pitch here has not been great for batting and batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa expects the trend to continue.

“Yeah, we knew that when we came here. Sharjah is not that great to bat except for the game that we played against Bangladesh — that was a very true wicket.

“Hats off to Pathum Nissanka for holding on the innings as batting was not up to standard, but the wicket wasn’t helping the batsmen, as well,” he said referring to Nissanka’s 72 against the Proteas.
