Giorgio Chiellini was ruled out of the Italian World Cup qualifiers on Wednesday with Switzerland and Northern Ireland after failing to recover from a thigh injury.

The European champions ’captain was in doubt among those questioned for key matches to qualify for the Qatar 2022 tournament, but the Italian Football Federation said it will leave the national team’s training camp on Wednesday.

Chiellini’s absence is a big blow for Friday’s match against the Swiss in Rome, with two Italian teams missing the lead in Group C.

The pair are the only teams competing for a single place at the World Cup in November and December next year.

Italy will face Northern Ireland at Windsor Park in Monday’s final match, and Switzerland will take on Bulgaria.

Blue coach Roberto Mancini has lost the 2020 Euro icon Chiellini and midfielder Ciro Immobile in less than 24 hours, and is sweating over the usefulness of Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.

The injured Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini and Nicolo Zaniolo were replaced on Monday by Danilo Cataldi of Lazio’s Real Madrid team and Matteo Pessina of Atalanta, who has just returned from the sidelines for more than a month.

Pessina, 24, came on as a stationary substitute when Atalanta beat Cagliarin 2-1 on Saturday, his first appearance since suffering a calf injury in a home defeat against AC Milan in early October.
