Ritsu Doan PSV Eindhoven winger has been added to the Japanese national team for the World Cup qualifiers against Vietnam and Oman, the Japan Football Association announced on Saturday.

He was initially sidelined for the Hanoi and Muscat matches on November 11 and 16, respectively, due to a knee injury.

However, coach Hajime Moriyasu has included a 23-year-old player in his squad as Japan wants to overcome the disappointing start to the final phase of the Asian Cup in Qatar next year.

The Japanese are now in fourth place in Group B, with six points from the first four games, six points behind Saudi Arabia’s leaders.

Only the top two teams in the two Asian qualifying tournaments will advance to Qatar 2022, and the third-placed team will enter a series of playoffs to finish fifth for teams on the continent.
