Five players from the Eritrean women’s under-20 football team were missing from a hotel in Uganda on Tuesday in a regional tournament, police and organizers reported.
The players disappeared from the Jinja hotel in southeastern Uganda and “reported the matter to police,” said the East and Central African football association, which is overseeing the tournament.

Eritrean athletes have often disappeared with their teams at international sporting events, usually to escape the oppressive regime in their country and the forced military regime.
Two football teams disappeared in two Ugandan tournaments in 2019 and in 2012 17 men’s national team players and one team doctor applied for political asylum in Uganda in 2012. Another 10 men’s national team players refused to take him home on a plane and asked for it. He stayed in Botswana after playing in a World Cup qualifier in 2015.
Few Eritrean athletes applied for asylum in Britain after the 2012 London Olympics.
