Srinagar, India administered by Kashmir – Five suspected insurgents have been killed by Indian forces in the southern district of India-administered Kashmir after a regional shooting sparked protests and one day Indian armed forces accused civilians of using them as “human shields”.

Police officials said that after a news story about the presence of rebels in the southern Kashmir villages of Pombay and Gopalpora, the cordon was set up as a result of a gun battle.
Officials said two rebels were killed in the village of Gopalpora. One of those killed was identified as Afaq Sikander, the newly emerged commander of The Resistance Group (TRF), who officials say is an armed group behind the recent killings of migrants and Hindus.
In a shooting in the town of Pombay, officials said three rebels were killed.
Tensions in India-administered Kashmir have been high since Monday, when authorities said two suspected insurgents were killed in the region’s main city of Srinagar in local Hyderpora.
Police said two civilians were also killed in a “crossfire.”
Witnesses to the deaths and families have discussed police claims. At least two families complained that the dead were used as “human shields” by Indian forces.
Families have been sitting indefinitely in the city center, facing the icy weather, demanding the return of civilian bodies.
The four people killed in the Hyderpo incident were buried in a border cemetery in the Kupwara district of northern Kashmir.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, with both sides claiming the region as a whole but governing parts of the region.
The armed uprising against New Delhi’s rule in India began in 1989, and the rebels demanded that the region unite with Pakistan or become independent.
The conflict escalated after the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejected the limited autonomy of the region in August 2019 and split it into two federal territories, imposing an impending blockade.

The latest rise in violence has occurred amid alleged killings by civilian rebels, where the targets have been mostly Hindus and migrant workers.
Since last month, at least 54 people have been killed in the region, including 15 civilians, 29 suspected insurgents and 10 soldiers.
Authorities have deployed an additional 5,500 paramilitary troops to bolster security in the region.
