Saturday’s countdown comes amid record-breaking numbers and concerns about the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

France had a record 104,611 COVID-19 infections on Saturday, breaking the 100,000 threshold for the first time since the pandemic began.

Saturday’s balance sheet hit the highest mark for the third day in a row.

They have come ahead of a videoconference meeting on Monday where President Emmanuel Macron and key members of his government will discuss new security measures for COVID-19.

Officials are concerned about the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

Already on Friday, the health authorities recommended that adults receive a booster-jab within three months of receiving the initial vaccination.

Now the government is moving to make the health card given to those vaccinated valid only if people accept the booster jab.

A walk is required to access cafes, restaurants and public areas, as well as international travel.

Some regions have already implemented their own security measures.

At the end of last month, for example, officials in Savoy, in a department in the south-east of France, re-established the compulsory wearing of masks, not only in public spaces inside, but also outside – a recent move in neighboring Italy.

The latest figures show a dramatic rise since the beginning of the month: on December 4, 50,000 were broken for the first time before the numbers steadily rose.

Since the pandemic began, France has recorded 122,546 deaths from coronavirus. To date, 76.5% of the population is fully integrated.
