(Reuters) – Nineteen people were killed, including nine children, and dozens more were injured in a fire in an apartment building in the Bronx district of New York on Sunday, according to city officials and local media.
New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that 19 people were killed as a result of a fire that broke out in a 19-story apartment building around 11 p.m.
Earlier on Sunday, authorities said 32 people had been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and a total of 60 were injured.
“They have confirmed that 19 people are dead right now and we have several others in critical condition,” Adams said in an interview with CNN.
Nine of the dead were children, the New York Times reported.
About 200 firefighters helped put out the blaze. His cause was not immediately known, Daniel Nigro, the city’s fire commissioner, told reporters at a news conference Sunday.
“Members found the victims on all floors of the stairs and were being taken out in cardiac and respiratory arrest,” he said.
Nigro said the smoke had spread to all floors of the building, probably because the door to the house had been left open, and the victims had suffered heavy smoke inhalation.
