Of the thousands captured by ISIL fighters, boys were forced to fight for the group, men were executed if they did not convert to Islam – and they were often executed, in any case – and women and girls were sold into slavery.

Germany, where a large Yazidi community lives, is one of the few countries that uses the legal principle of universal jurisdiction to take legal action against such abuses, allowing it to be prosecuted even if the crimes were committed in a foreign country.

The mother and daughter were bought as slaves

According to German prosecutors, al-Jumailly bought a Yazidi woman and her five-year-old daughter as slaves in a Syrian ISIL base in 2015.

In early August 2014, both were taken prisoner in northern Iraq and the group “sold and sold them as slaves several times.”

Al-Jumailly took the woman and her daughter to her home in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, forcing them to “save the house and live according to strict Islamic rules,” not providing enough food and punishing them regularly. to the accusation leveled against him.

The prosecutor said that in late 2015, al-Jumailly chained the girl to the bars of a window on a day when the sun reached 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) and she died. The punishment was allegedly committed because the five-year-old boy had soaked the bed.

The girl’s mother, who survived the captivity, testified about the torment she visited her daughter at the al-Jumailly and Wenisch trials.

Identified only by the name Nora, she was replaced by a group that includes mother Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer living in London, who, along with former Yazidis, led a campaign to recognize her as a genocide in crimes against ISIL. slave and the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad.

Murad has called on the UN Security Council to refer cases of crimes against Yazidis to the International Criminal Court or to create a specific tribunal for genocide against the community.
