New Zealand has left history man Ajaz Patel for the Bangladesh Test series

Spinner Ajaz Patel has been ruled out of the New Zealand squad for less than three weeks in the series against Bangladesh after becoming the third ball to receive all 10 wickets in an international cricket match.

The 33-year-old achieved a rare feat in the second round against India in Mumbai earlier this month, but exceeded the requirements for next month’s matches on the greener surfaces of Mount Maunganui and Christchurch.

“You feel like Ajaz broke the Indian record after the show,” coach Mike Stead said in a statement.

“However, we have always applied the policy of choosing courses for horses and we believe that the selected players are best suited to the way we want to face Bangladesh at home.”

Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell may offer a tour, but New Zealand’s main focus will be on moving the ball to the beat, with players chosen by Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner, Kyle Jamieson and Matt Henry.

Tom Latham will be the captain of the entire team for the first time in place of Kane Williamson, who repeated an injury to his Indian elbow and will miss two tests.

Free-scoring Devon Conway has returned to the team, however, when he was hit with frustration at the 2021 Twenty20 World Cup after losing a 1-0 series in India due to a broken hand.

The series opens at Bay Oval on New Year’s Day, and will be New Zealand’s first test since winning the World Test Championship (WTC) this year, beating India in England.

The Black Caps are undefeated in eight home games in the series, the last of which was a 1-0 loss to South Africa in March 2017.

NEW ZEALAND GANG:

Tom Latham (captain), Devon Conway, Will Young, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, Rachin Ravindra, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.
