Nearly 142,000 new infections are registered in the country as politicians run rallies gathered before the upcoming polls.

India has reported 141,986 new cases of COVID-19 every day – most since the end of May – because the coronavirus variant Omicron exceeds the Delta version in major cities.

The health ministry also reported 285 new deaths on Saturday, bringing the total to 483,463, bringing the total to 35.37 million infections.

Coronavirus cases that feed high-transmission Omicron variants are rocketing across India, prompting federal and state governments to reintroduce a range of restrictions quickly.

Last year’s rise was fueled in part by large crowds at election rallies, where politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, often appeared without masks and addressed a large crowd.

The tidal wave hit the country’s health care system, prompting people to seek oxygen and hospital beds. Crematoria were left without a place. The number of daily deaths exceeded 4,000 at the height of the crisis, and at least 200,000 people were killed between March and May, a number believed to be underestimated.

Warning to officials

Health officials say the new rise is causing fewer deaths and many cases are asymptomatic. But they have warned that the Omicron variant is being taken too lightly, and that many cases, albeit lighter, could put pressure on the country’s fragile health care system.

Overall, the number of new cases has increased almost fourfold in the last week. Hospital admissions are on the rise and in some states medical staff have been asked to cut back on winter vacations.

The city is experiencing a tremendous rise, with Mumbai, the financial capital of India, surpassing the previous day’s largest figure. New COVID-19 cases – Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur – have been fired in five states involved in the election campaign.

In recent weeks, Modik has led major rallies in several cities, most notably in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the country governed by his Bharatiya Janata Party. Political opponents of the party have also launched a campaign, ignoring health regulations.

Earlier this week, the Congress party organized a marathon, thousands of people ran without masks and fell so close together that they fell on top of each other.

New Delhi’s prime minister, Arvind Kejriwal, contracted the virus after being seen without a mask while conducting political rallies in several states.
